I've been a NOVAAR member for a few months now and we have an organized
launch once a month at the national park in Manassas. Come check it
out.

I fly out at the George Washington campus up near Ashburn, Virginia.
Take Route 7 about 15 miles north of Tysons Corners shopping mall, and
you'll come to the beautiful open field on the right. Unlike the Manassas
Battlefield where NOVAAR launches, there are very few trees out in that
direction. In fact, I would probably spend more time with NOVAAR myself
if they had their launching there instead. I'm sure most of the NOVAAR
members are familiar with it. I never understood why they didn't use it
more frequently as a club. I've heard nothing but horror stories about
the rocket eating trees in Manassas.

NOVAAR and NARHAMS are the two local NAR clubs. I'm not personally
familiar with the MD Tripoli section.
NOVAAR is in Northern Virginia, is more contest oriented, and is
National Champion Section. Their web site is pretty lame. (As a
NARHAMS member I'm allowed one cheap shot, as long as I smile when I
type it).
NARHAMS is in suburban Maryland, has monthly club launches in
Middletown MD (near Frederick), and sponsors the twice-monthly public
launches at Goddard. NARHAMS has a great web site at:

Feel free to email me if you have any questions about NARHAMS.
Seriously...... both clubs contain great people, and welcome all
fliers at all club launches. I think you'll have a great time with
either or both groups. See the NARHAMS web site for directions to
their events. You can email NOVAAR folks from their web site for info
(Frank Dohrer, the president, has been very helpful to me).

Bob,
To my knowledge, NOVAAR has never used the GW campus as a launch area. A
number of members do launch there as individuals, however.
If you have a point of contact, I would love to have it. Before we can
schedule club activities there, we need to have permission of the owner or the
owner's agent, show proof of liability, etc. Also need to drag out the maps
and see exactly where we are in relationship to end of runways and such at
Dulles.
As I said, individuals do launch there, but there are a lot more bases to
touch before there are club sponsered activities there.

Build a rocket, fly a rocket.
Don't ever forget that this is supposed to be FUN!

NARHAMS sponsors public launches at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center on
the 1st and 3rd Sundays of every month (weather permitting). We also have
sport launches on the 2nd Saturday at Middletown Park near Frederick, MD.
Check out <http://www.weathertracker.com/~narhams> for more information.
