Seems to me that this discussion group belongs to Bob Kaplow who I
figure is a friend of Frank's (who by the way decided to rewrite the
rules for himself). Has anyone read Bruce Kelly's letter posted on the
Tripoli web page? Bob we could have a good discussion you and I.

How much did he have to pay Jerry Irvine for the ownership rights?

Bob overposts. But he is a bit ecentric too. I hope my well above
average posting is at least adding to the debate 80% of the time.

Yes. Bruce Kelly needs to learn how to use a spell-checker.

For the record:

1) It's not my discussion group. It was founded by a friend of mine here in
the Chicago area, and I'[m probably been posting to it longer than anyone
else, except for a 2 year hiatus when I was laid off and not connected to
the internet, I've been here since day 1.

2) As many have observed, internet behavior is very different from face to
face. On the net we're more like we are in our cars, while driving. Don't
take ANYONES net behavior to be an indication of what they are really like
in person. Especially me!

3) I've been active in the hobby continiously since 1964, so I do have a bit
of experience.

4) To the best of my knowledge, I've never met Kosdon. I'm not Kosdons,
Irvines, Bunnys, Kellys, Catos, or any one elses lackey. The only one of
those 5 I consider to be a friend is Bunny. I speak my mind, and no one will
ever change that.

5) I was screwed by Kelly and his BoD back in 1996. I wasn't the first.
Kosdon got reamed twice now, and he won't be the last. Unless the members do
something about the abusive behavior of the BoD before it can happen again.

6) Yes, I've read Kellys latest rant. It reads a lot like his pre-response
to my letter in the November 1995 Tripoli Report. He kept saying he would
answer my questions clearly, but never answered them at all. He really
should be in politics.

7) You're welcome to have a polite email discussion with me. So is any one
else, time permitting. Simply remove the invalid planet name from my email
address above.

If the TRA Bod is the center, I want to be as FAR from the center as I can
get!

Actually, if you calculate ownership by who uses rmr most, then (on my
news feed) Bob does _not_ own this newsgroup ;-) This is regardless of
regardless of whether you use posts, lines or bytes as the criteria.

Can this utility tell us the % of Jerry's posts in which he says "I told you so"?

I spoke to Bob briefly at NARAM43 when he was launching his American Pie,
and once in the hallway at the motel. I was quite surprised.

And I almost fell out of my chair at the meeting when Mark Bundick was
speaking and someone banged on the wall from the outside. Without missing a
beat Mark looked at Bob and said, iirc, "Must be Barry Tunick, Bob".

So while our internet foibles follow us into the real world, often the
internet exaggerates us.

Wow, I've been quiet lately! Last time someone posted the numbers, IIRC,
I was in or near the top 10. I thought tai fu had been unsually quiet
lately, but he's only slipped down to number 34.

Of course, those of us in the know realize that tai fu is an undercover ATF
agent, running both rmr and TRA from an undisclosed location with the
assistance of Elvis, Dennis Rodman, and Wil Smith, who likes to wear pink
frilly nighties when he and Bruce K fly black helicopters (designed by shrox
while moonlighting from his third moonlighting job) over NAR EX night
launches to steal Dave Fergus' DesCon 10 design that uses Buran boosters
stolen during a Post Office interview, in which a box was discovered that
may or may not contain the Apogee Saturn V, which someone is auctioning a
clone of on Ebay for $2.5 million, plus $14.95 shipping and handling, unless
it is shipped to the European Union via the internet, which were both
invented by Jerry Irvine in his plot to take over the world and sell AP to
Kosdon in return for OOP Aerotech motors, relabled as his own, while Chris
Taylor launches liquid-fueled Micro-Maxx rockets with transmitting video
from INSIDE an unnaproved storage magazine, where Shred Vector has a secret
stash of Rock-A-Chute motors that Mark Simpson reinfored with balsa gussets
to prove that we don't need no stinkin' epoxy, which inspired 37 humor
threads by Dancing Baby, Neil, and Tod Hilty, who looks like a cross between
Max Headroom and my elementary school principal, who assigned 1 million
monkeys with brain implants to type a new edition of the Pink book, but
ended up with a State law contrary to Federal regulations, which prohibit
the US constitution and authorize a $5 fee for every email you forward to
Bill Gates, who once launched a model rocket with Bob Kaplow in the early
'60s, so why have Bob Kaplow and Mark Morely never been photographed
together?

Oops, wrong story!

Mr. Kaplow-

I don't find this to be an execuse for obnoxious and rude behavior behind
the wheel or keyboard. Considering we spend more time driving a car or
keyboard and less time face to face, what kind of society are we building?

I have no reason to doubt you are a quite likable and polite person,
face-to-face. Since it is unlikely we'll meet, the only character judgement
I can make is from your postings to this group. Let's just say my impression
of you is less than favorable. Of course, you may or may not care.

In response to a recent posting you abruptly called the poster an idiot. You
wouldn't do this in person; why to you think it's acceptable behavior
on-line?

We are the way we act.

I disagree. I'm the same in my car, in person, or even on the internet. I
don't believe in mis-representing myself regardless of the media. "Be true

I got him once too. He was talking in front of a NARAM crowd, possibly at
NARAM-33 which we ran here inthe Chicago area, when someone accidentally hit
the switch to drop the overhead screen behind him. I immediately said to
everyone "Ignore the curtain behind the man"!

Because someone who would say to an airline security person "Why didn't you
find the traces of contriband in my luggage" IS an idiot.

Back in 1991, my internet connection was via work. Most of it still is. But

I have had long periods of lull and am at an all time peak right now
IIRC. But I have also been posting actual facts (encyclopedias) as part
of my bandwidth. That's no excuse for the sheer number of posts, though.

All but top entries snipped to slightly reduce my bandwidth :)

I think this is true. Partly it has to do with appearances, or lack thereof.
Without being able seeing a person's face, it's hard to make a clear judgement
of the writer's true personality. Someone who may be merely driving home a
point might come across to the reader as obnoxious or arrogant. Also, written
speech tends to differ somewhat from the way people actually talk.

And it's easier to get carried away in an argument online, and be less tactful
than you'd be in person.

There's a certain art to textual eloquence, to expressing one's feelings accurately
by way of the written language. This social literacy flourished in the days of the
handwritten letter and the typewriter, but has been rather lost in recent decades,
dominated by telephone, radio, cinema, and television.

Perhaps the internet will start to revive it.

Even getting dial-up at all was a revelation for me after first
accessing the internet via university dedicated networks at colleges.

I had used modem to modem transfers for file copying from mainframes and
chating with BBS's but the internet was initially telnet, ftp and email.

An optimistic thought, but don't hold your breath waiting for it to happen.
Generally speaking, in our society today, many people seem to be prone to
laziness in their verbal and written communications. Rather than learn to
properly use the language we already have, many cling to a limited
vocabulary and elementary grammatical skills. Hence the overabundance of
slang these days. The e-mails I receive at work are amazing. I am a
maintenance supervisor for a large insurance company here in S.C. Many of
the people in our company can not properly communicate their maintenance and
repair needs to my department. We get quite a laugh out of some of them -
and these people are processing insurance claims with medical terminology in
them! I could go on and on about this subject. Actually I already have.

The other factor in this is that so many people these days are over-
sensitive. They are "offended" too easily by what others say or do or what
they mistakenly perceive others to say or do. Therefore, when someone
hastily writes something, it is often misunderstood and taken as an affront
which then solicits a greater reaction in return. Our society as a whole
needs to mellow out a bit.

OK. I am stepping down from my soap box. I am also admitting that my
spelling, vocabulary and grammar are not what they should be either. I also
admit that it is sometimes useful to adopt a different style of
communication to convey a particular mood that the reader can not see in
your facial expressions.

Bye-Bye, Y'all!
Eric

More than could prove it even to others not involved in the deal, much
less a court. I seem to be an attractive nuisance for these claims.

One. But she was ordered by the court to NOT seek child support and the
minute I bring it to the attention of the court she will have her second
CONVICTION for contempt. I love the brainless, immoral, irrational

What a coincidence! I've been doing my taxes, and while rummaging
through my file cabinet today, discovered and old Xerox 820-II 8" disk
in one of the folders. Probably still has the original WordStar and
dBase II on the disk (if it's even readable after 20 years).

Wow. You've got to be pretty desperate to get IDSL!

After finding out that there are no other options for me, the phone
company offered it to me. Sure, I could pay $100 per month for the
dual-channel usage, then pay another $40 or so to the ISP, so for (almost)
$150 per month, I could get something like 160k. I told the rep from the
phone company that he was insane, and he laughed, and agreed "Yeah, it's
about as pricy as you can get.".

If I had the money, I'd cough up $450 per month, get a point-to-point t1
from my office to my home... three times the money, but about ten times the
bandwidth.

$69 a month complete!

of course the local telco, SBC/Ameritech, keeps running commercials to
convince everyone thye need DSL, but whenever you call, you can't have it.

This is often due to subtleties that are lost when using written forms
of communication. There's no body language, no facial expression. This
wasn't as much a problem when the written form was restricted to
letters and such, as the period between exchanges gave a natural "time
for cooling off". If you wrote an angry response, you may relent later
and before the reply was posted. The combination of writing, and
instant exchange, are the culprits here.

No, these were made from long rolls of paper tape that had the small rectangular holes. The
tape was two inches wide or so. I have seen the ones made from cards folded over and
stapled.
I guess you don't remember. I wondered if it was from some unique mainframe that my local
school system had used.

Hmm.. You got me.. The only punch tape I remember was the apparently
more standard 1" wide stuff with round holes. As a youngin' I used to
raid the local Telco billing office's dumpster for miles of the stuff.

Flinging rolls of it into trees was standard procedure during
Halloween.

Hmm, seems like the mean time to repeat for paper tape nostalgia is about
six months. So, did you have a hand punch and splicing kit? Do you know
why the ASCII code for delete/rubout is 377 octal? Do you remember when an
ASR-33 teletype was considered a bulk i/o device? Do you know what ASR
stands for?

I don't have a hand punch and splicing kit, but I do know the answer

holes than to remove them....

*Ahem* *cough* *cough*

That should be ASR-33 Teletype, with a capital "T". If we're going to wax
nostalgic, we may as be historically correct :)

Ah, Teletype. The Model 33, 43 and 40. Paper tape. 8" floppy drives. The plant
in Skokie, IL that got turned into a shopping mall. We designed, layed out,
and processed our own IC's at that plant. Not to mention all the mechanical
work, the molds, PC boards, everything. It was a cool place, until AT&T closed
it. Sigh.

(Spent way too much time, too many times, reloading too many of the

Also worked on some Model 33's, ASR and KSR units, with both 5- and

177. 377 is the teletype code. ASCII only goes 000-177.

My wife & I used the square punch card holes as confetti at our wedding.

I had a 1" tape puncher/reader (leftover from a National Weather

We made several of those "punchcard wreaths" way back when. (I don't

Wow! Brings back memories. Way back when - sniff- Xerox offered their employees
an 820, dual 8" floppies and a Diablo 630 printer for, IIRC a couple of grand,
interest free payroll deduction. What a deal! You could upgrade to one 8"
floppy and a whopping 5meg hard drive for a few hundred bucks more. I was ready
to sign on the dotted line when my future bride talked me out of it. God, she
was so smart!

I had a souped up 820 on my desk at work for a couple of years - 8" floppy, 8"
hard drive, 64K RAM, 16K QuadRam print buffer, 1 meg hard wired ramDrive, 300
baud Hayes (non acoustic) modem, driving a high speed Diablo P38 dot matrix and
a Xerox 4500 laser managed by a flakey serial port electronic AB box. I could
push 9600 baud over 100' with that box!

CP/M, WordStar, DBase2 and MultiPlan were my friends.

The Z80 was awesome!

As a quick follow-on, I had to type my wife's masters thesis using
WordStar and that Diablo 630, but had to print each page 3 times
(mathematics). Once for regular text, once for Greek symbols, once for
math symbols (switching daisy wheels each time). If I didn't line the
page up JUST RIGHT each time I had to start offer. Took days to print
the whole thing out (remember how slow AND NOISY those printers were?).
These days I don't even think about the time/energy to print something
out on a laser printer...

Wasn't the H11 based on a PDP11? I do remember hanging out at my local Heathkit

Scientific, Altair or Altos box. Remember those?

I couldn't afford any of that exotic stuff back in the early - mid 70's, was
prolly making about 3 bucks an hour. With rent at 95/month, gas, food, LP's,

I'm always saving motors out of stuff. An 8" floppy head stepper motor
(and the door mechanism) became the camera drive for some astromony photos

Heh. Someone I was talking to recently opined that a modern microcomputer
can emulate/simulate any "classic" computer in at least real time, and
probably faster. Many of these emulators have already been written; you
can find PDP8, PDP10, Timex/Sinclair, Cosmac ELF, most early video game
machines, and more. Some have animated front panels and such.

Now that's scary.

Not sure about the location, I hired on at divestiture, working for Teletype
which at the time was a wholly owned subsidiary of Western Electric. I was
not real familiar with the Western Electric group. I only saw them when I
went around to pick up their broken Dataspeed 40 printers, to take to the
shop for repair. Those seemed to be simpler times, where it was cost
effective to do component level repair on things.

Mike,

The last name I remember was "Synchronous Terminal Products", right before
AT&T sold us to Memorex Telex. It was all that was left of the Teletype core
at the time. I was sold along with it, and then dumped along with 90 other
Teletype faithful 9 months later. Most of us found our way back into AT&T Bell
Labs. I just celebrated 23 years in the Teletype/AT&T/Lucent world last month.
I'm one of the few that are left.

Teletype was located in Skokie, on Touhy Ave at Carpenter/Central. About 1
mile west of the Edens. Just east of A.B. Dick. It's a shopping mall now. Back
then there were two big fenced in parking lots, and a full block of buildings.
R&D was the two story building at the corner of Touhy and Central,
Manufacturing was the Big Blue builiding by the water tower with the big "T"
on it. They turned part of the Manufacturing building into a parking garage,
and leveled the rest :(

Teletype was always a subsidiary of Western Electric.

Yup. First of 5 PDP-11's I've owned, and the only one I sadly don't have any
more.

Yup. There's a web site where you can "toggle" a PDP-8. Emulaters for the
PDP-8, PDP-11, and even the VAX. A friend runs a VAX emulator on his laptop,
and then VMS on that! And the VMS engineering group now even supports that
environment!

For those of you old time VAX folks, IIRC you get about 1 VUP per 100 MHz of
Pentium.

I was technically "laid off" and then rehired when Computer Systems was shut
down with the purchase of NCR. I had to go through a 3 hour taped interview,
and cut in pay to stay with NCR. I was then able to transfer into Network
Systems. I am now the working for Lucent OTS with just over 18 years.

This was only part of Teletype that went to Memorex, as I recall (6544
controller type equipment I really enjoyed working on it!) By this time our
part of Teletype had become Computer Service, which was then disbanded with
the purchase of NCR.
