I had an opportunity somewhere in '90 or '91 to meet Herb at one of the
Pearl River ModRoc seminars. I had found out a few years later, much to
my sadness, that he had passed on.

While there though, he had a number of video transfers of CineRoc reels
that were BEYOND cool! I was wondering if anyone out there may possibly
have any of these in AVI, MPG or other PC video format.

Much appreciated!

I do not know, but sure hope that copies of his footage is preserved and made
available.

In 1988 I did a Sunguidance R&D project that involved 5 Cineroc flights. Herb
Desind loaded the cartridges and arranged for Kodak to process them. One of
them, the best of the 5, is available as a Quicktime movie on my web page
(there are QT players for PC's). Go to:

The way I have it...
Herb Desind's family has donated just about all of Herb's files, kit
collection, and film footage to Smithsonian NASM. I'll have to check with Ed
Pearson on how to get access to whatever can be made available.

Herb had file cabinents full of photos of NASA vehicles, old Estes kits dating
back to the '60's, New Cinerocs by the cases, and of course so many cineroc
films that it can't all be cataloged.

Most (if not all) of Herb's Cinerocs, both new and used, were sold by
Scott Branche a couple of years back. The influx actually depressed the
"spot price" of a Cineroc for a while. Scott sold his Camrocs as well.

I happen to own two of his Cinerocs, a new and a used one. Plus one of
the Camrocs.

Kurt

P.S. Scott told me that all Herb's Cineroc film cassettes were
mistakenly discarded by someone. That's why all of the used Cinerocs he
had for sale were minus a cartridge.

He came to Hawaii in the 70's, I drove him around Oahu and he flew
cinarocs out of DimondHead, and other fields around the island. He
lost one that was launched by the edge of a pinapple field, it came
down into a gully area that no one can get into. He was also a SIAR
member for life too.

The Herb Desind collection has been fully catalogued at NASMby this time.
I believe that I can say now that it is available for viewing with special
permission. If you contact Brian Nicklas at NASM (Archivist), he could possibly
set up a time to do this. Whether the reels are there, you would have to
inquire.

I was recently in Washington D.C talking with Brian Nicklas ( in April of
this year) and at that time he had just received the Herb Desind collection,
all 84 file boxes. He informed me that it would be a year or so before
anything would be available. If you're really interested in the collection
give Brian a call at (202) 357-3133. He's been more than willing to speak
with me in the past. Good luck.
