I will be in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on a business trip. Are
there any very good, or "must see" hobby shops there, with an emphasis
on model rockets and model airplanes?

Thanks,

Sam

remove the "lim" from slimidkiff and change "boilers" to "purdue" to
reply.

Not sure, Andy Moore(oft found on UTR) may know more, as he stays/lives near Amsterdam

.... but I know there are some must see 'hobby' shops, with rocket shaped objects in them!!

Well... I guess the only difference between a model rocket and a dildo is
the type of propellant in them.

I'm based 20min S of Amsterdam, but have to admit that I know of no real model stores that
specialise in rockets/planes.

All the Dutch guys I know get their stuff via mail order (well I assume they do!). That'd be either
Rebel Rocketry, Caveman or Spacetec. Dunno anyone who does planes so can't help at all there.

Maybe one of the TripoliNL guys may be of more help?

Or if it is more along the model lines, then the DRRA guys.

Sorry don't have URL for DRRA, but TripoliNL can be found at www.tripoli.nl, or try Frank de Brouwer
at www.rebelrocketry.com

PS Most visitors to Amsterdam are usually looking for a different kind of shop!!!

Zero clue how close he is to where you'll be, but I'd suggest giving
Frank DeBrouwer at Rebel Rocketry a visit, if at all possible.

Frank heard that I was having problems getting in touch with AED to get
my RDAS serviced. Even though I didn't buy it from him (Frank's in the
Netherlands, I'm in the US), he offered to accept shipment of it and
make sure it got into AED's hands for service. He's kept me updated on
the status, and checked with them periodically on my behalf. I just
received word from him today that it has been fixed, and he'll be
shipping it back.

Vendors like that deserve our business, and if I were in Europe, you can
bet he'd be at the top of my list of folks to buy from!

This is a second trip. The red light district was interesting, but
not really worth a second trip. I've been to the Anne Frank House,
the Van Gogh museum, and the Rijksmuseum. I'll definitely do some mor
normal sight-seeing on this visit. At the same time, if there is a
truly amazing unique hobby shop (or toy store, for that matter) it
would be worth a visit. I'm not a complete dweeb. :-)

It's been my experience that anything generally legal you can buy in
country A, you can buy in country B, so I'm not overly optimistic that
a query like this will produce a useful result, but until you ask you
don't know.

In any case, you are right that there is more to life than rockets...

Sam,

Frank DeBrouwer at Rebel Rocketry is one of our dealers in the Neatherlands.
Stop and see him. He gets quite a lot of BSD kits. www.rebelrocketry.com
We find Frank a great guy to do business with and I hope to meet him
someday. A business trip over there may just be in order. You know, to
check up on our interests. ;-)

The only shop I know near Amsterdam is in Leiden, about 30 min. soutch of
Amsterdam. It's called "De Vliegershop" and it's website is at
http://www.rc-modelshop.nl/. Unfortunately, it's in Dutch only. So a short
course Dutch:

rocket = raket
model(s) = model(len)
airplane(s) = vliegtuig(en)
motor(s) = motor(en)

I've never actually visited their shop, so I don't know whether it's worth
the trip. I know them because they advertise in our magazine, NERO Bulletin
(experimental rockets). As also mentioned in the other replies, do contact
Frank de Brouwer of Rebel Rocketry, he might know more.

Good luck and enjoy your stay in Amsterdam.

I have though... It's one of 2 model stores in Leiden, both 5 minutes walk from my place.

It is mostly a kite store, but does have quite a bit of RC stuff (cars/planes) as well. They've
always had a small display of Estes rockets in the window, and inside they often have a few Das
Modell rocket kits.

The other store is more for Airfix-type kits, trains and is good for modelling supplies, but alas no
rockets.

I didn't mention it in my earlier post, because I wouldn't really say that it is a 'must see' place.

There is also Caveman rocketry in Leiden... not a shop, but mail order. If you're desperate for
something, you can often arrange a visit. (www.cavemanrocketry.com)

Just for info Leiden is about 30mins South of Amsterdam by train, or 15 mins S of Schiphol Airport.
There might be something in the Hague (10mins S of Leiden), but I'll have to go dig out the
'Gouden Gids' (Yellow Pages).
