Monthly Missile by Chris Kiekens.

Good show Chris! 138 votes out out of a total 2,611 votes cast. I'll
have the totals broken down by the appearance question and creativity
question soon so you can see how you did in both categories. Are you
surprised by the number of votes you got? What does your wife (and the
wives and girlfriends in the audience and at home) think about this
silliness? : )

Chris gets first choice from the fabulous prizes Carol Merrill is now showing:
http://www.aeroconsystems.com/descon/descon8/descon8_index.html#goodies
Once Chris has selected his loot Kelo gets to choose from what's
remaining, then Tim, then Emmanuel and so on till all 14 are gone. Jump
right here in this thread and claim your prize. How does it feel to
find out you've won? What did you think of your competition? Which
rockets were your favorites?

Kelo Wavio wins second place for his Lander with 114 votes - Kelo is
becoming a regular here at the RMR Descon podium accepting either 1st or
2nd place. Well done again, Kelo - you are an amazing modeler.

Tim Bush takes third with Beldar the Conehead. Tim's entry cracked me
up. When I first got his pictures I thought "What the heck is this?"
You might think about dropping an email to Dan Ackroyd to let him know.

The Oatlander by Emmanuel Camburako takes 4th, nicely done Emmanuel.
Oatmeal, it's not just for breakfast anymore, is it?

Coming in 5th is the Lusty Cornmaiden by Kevin Trojanowski. What a
hoot! This rocket also tickled my funny bone.

I'd like to comment on all of them but you folks don't want to read my
drivel .... but I do have to say something about my favorites that
didn't win. When I first saw Astron Matzo I busted a gut. I thought
this was one of the funniest thing I ever saw in a rocket. The fact
that it flew was just icing on the cracker. Nicely done Art. I thought
Bottle Rocket by Robert Galejs was also a cool entry - it fit the
contest and the title on a bunch of different levels. Cup of Coffee to
go was also a favorite that didn't place but was still incredibly simple
and clever, nice job Greg.

Many thanks to Dan Bihary and Kevin Trojanowski for their continued
support, and I'd like to thank the Academy for giving me this
opportunity to take up an amazing amount of bandwidth. Check out the
split between 3rd and 9th places, there was only a difference of 10
votes - a very close race indeed. 10th, 11th and 12th was also a
squeaker with a separation of one each.

Wow!
You have no idea how excited I am at this moment!
My wife thinks I am insane, and I have had reactions from disgust to
amusement on this rocket!
Choosing a prize was very difficult, as there are so many great things to
choose from.
If I thought I had a chance, I would have thought about it proactively..
After involving the entire family in the choice, I have decided on The LOC
HPR Bonanza, maybe with this we can attempt to build some of the fine
rockets in Descon!
I think I will end up buying half of the prizes on my own anyway!

Thanks to everyone for all their hard work on this contest.
I would be happy to help out with the next Descon in any way I can (hold me
to this).

Thanks again!
and congrats to all the winners!

Way to go Chris. You too Kelo. I had the pleasure of seeing Kelo's entry fly.
It got my vote. And a 12th place on a rocket that I had to build to check
aerodynamics anyway isn't too bad. Can I enter my full-scale barrel in the next
oddroc contest? ;-)

What? Me? The voting is done? Sheesh, ya get busy and miss a couple weeks of
reading here and look what happens......

Congrats Chris! You might find the DESCON thing grows on ya. I about gagged
on my beer laughing when I saw your entry, most excellent. Ya sure you
really want that LOC Designers Special :-)

I guess I'll go for that really nice looking pad from Yellow Jacket. My pad
isn't really cut out for bigger G & H powered jobs and this one will be a
nice addition to mis-fire alley at our section's launches. I really didn't
think I'd place anywhere near the top this time. There were so many great
entries. I wouldn't have thought that there were that many folks out there
into the Odd Roc thing, but there ya go.

Thanks again to Bob for the great job hosting and posting.

Congrats again Kelo, we're going to have to figure out a contest in
which you just can't win. Hey, now wouldn't that be a challenge - try
to figure out a theme in which Kelo comes in last place! : ) I don't
think it's doable. Thanks for the kind words as well but I had a lot of
help with this contest - Kevin, Dan, Khim and all the rest really played
a big part.

(I still think the Interplanetary POS Trashmobile color scheme for your
lander would be a hoot. Rust streaks, parts falling off, graffiti,
patches, a couple of primer gray landing legs - it would look just like
one of the wrecks driving around town.)

Okeedokee, Tim Bush, it's your turn at the trough!

Not to worry Tai, look at the way the voting went:

7 31 38 Gone in 60cc

People might not have thought much of the way your rocket looked but
they appreciated your cleverness in utilizing common cast off parts.
That says a lot. I'll bet a clearer picture would have helped, maybe
not. It's hard to know what strikes these people's fancy. Look where
mine placed! That's two contests running where I've been in the cellar.

Thanks for playing along anyway.

It was a tough decision, and the pad was definitely in the top 3, but I work
in a plant that manufactures steel tube, and things out of those
tubes...looks like a government job for the welders to me..and maybe a
couple of engineers...
besides, I love a surprise, and am still relatively new at this.. I can use
as many rockets as I can get my hands on!
I loved yours as well, and seeing that you say it can be made out of Fat Boy
parts..that is one of my favourites..I bet I make one of your soon too!

Don't feel bad, Darren -- I've got a collection of found parts, and the
standard airframe portion mostly assembled. OTOH, mine is mainstream
enough to enter in a future DesCon; it's in the same (alternate) future
history as my Luna 2-18 Express, but built on a much larger scale.
Should be done in a few months. B)

Yours grew on me, Chris. I didn't like it at first because (a) it was too pink,
too fluffy, too, too, uh... (b) it didn't seem to be working. Then I got to
liking it because it was too pink, too fluffy, too, too, uh... Like Bob said,
"I like the ones that make me laugh." Actually, I had decided in advance that
I would cast as many votes as there were prizes, and I ended up not voting for
some that deserved a vote under this system. Yours got one, though.

well I wanted it to very obviously stand out as something unusually.

And although I am not preferencial to pink I am even less preferencial to
purple (the only other choice)

I like the Inflatable idea and using it as the integrity of the rocket. Not
just sticking an inflatable skin on a normal rocket.

IE this rocket can not fly unless it is inflated properly.

O well I still enjoy it and as soon as I perfect it I willfly it regularly

I'll admit I got a chuckle out of that one. Especially after the

You'll enjoy it, Chuck! And I think that makes it my turn. I wish you all
could see the conversations going on here, because I have an 8-year-old helping
me decide. Hers didn't win, y'know, but she has to be considered. I want
everybody to know that Bob Fortune was concerned for her before it occured to
me that she might be disappointed. Add that to all his other contributions to
this event!

Anyway, Amanda is getting something out of this. We're going to buy a Wizard
and a bunch of BT-20 and build the rocket she's been trying to describe to me
for weeks -- essentially a Superroc. (Amanda wanted the VB E54 and had no idea
what that involved...I'm so thankful it's gone, it would have tempted me too.)

As for me, there's a tough choice still there for me. Five of the remaining
prizes appeal to me a lot! So I'll be practical.

I have two staging projects waiting for just the right miniature ignitor.
Either of the kits offered would give me the pyrogen I need, but... I believe
I'll go with the Ignitorman kit. When my project is done I'll be able to make
up a good bundle for club use. Amanda can twist wires together!

Thanks, Rob, and thanks again, Bob!

Hey Peter,

That Igniterman is great stuff, you'll really like it. And thanks for
the kind words!

Just to bring everyone up to speed on who chose what, here's what we
have to date:

1 Monthly Missile Chris Kiekens LOC Designer Special
2 Lander K. Wavio Yellow Jacket Wasp Pad
3 Beldar the Conehead T. Bush Aardvark Tomahawks
4 Oatlander E. Camburako C&T Hobbies VB Extreme 54
5 Lusty Cornmaiden K. Trojanowski Aerocon Parachute fun-pak
6 NCAA C. Straka USR Stinger Two
7 Eyeful Tower P. Clay Igniterman Kit
8 MORFEAR the Noseless M. Morely Magnelite Kit
9 Space Spud N. Newlon
10 The Whole Enchilada
11 NASA EV-A
12 CAST AWAY
13 FTBOD
14 Sprinkles

Mark Morely won 8th place with Morefear the Noseless and was going on
vacation. He left me a wish list and the Magnelite kit was his choice
should his top picks be gone. That brings the prize selection around to
Norm Newlon for Space Spud.

Your turn at the treasure chest, Norm!

Chuck, did it really take this contest to get you to the point where you
can't do *anything* "WITHOUT thinking about rockets"?

That pretty much describes my state of mind most of the time. Heck, even
watching my son's baseball team gets me thinking about
rockets--shoulder-launched anti-personnel missiles mostly! ;-)

Congrats to you, Chuck, and to all the other Descon 8 winners!

Thanks Bob! I can give a happy home to the Sky Angle Cert-3 drogue chute.

Many thanks to B2 Rocketry (not to mention all the other vendors, Bob, his

What timing....just sat down and the announcement popped up!

I certainly owe the same thanks that so many other people have echoed. My
heartfelt thanks to you, your helpers, and all the vendors who donated
gifts. Not to diminish my pride in actually winning a prize :-), but I get
more entertainment out of the Descons than I will get out of any prize.

I guess I have chosen the Shadow Composites video set. Maybe I can actually
improve my remedial-level fiberglassing skills. Gee, I wonder if I get a
roll of heat tape with the videos as shown on their web site? Good prize
either way.

I look forward to future contests.

To all the vendors, thanks for your support of DESCON. Your generosity has

I appreciate your comments. In the previous contest (and for my 2nd entry
this time) I basically just wrote-up a design that I had, and had no
expectations. However, I was proud of my concept for The Whole Enchilada.
I don't think there was any odder a roc this time around. I like the prize
of course, but the recognition of my idea is better.

Damn! Another good idea from Jerry!

Whenever I win something, I always contact and thank the manufacturer. I did
that with Barry Lynch when I won the LOC Cyclotron kit he donated to the
SWOOFF raffle last month. And my offer of a "brutally honest" review was
accepted! In fact, he was thrilled. The rocket is in the finishing stage
right now, which with Monokote I do before construction. Last night I got my
shipment from the Sanding Catalog, including a set of brad point bits, so I
drilled the baffle holes in the MMT and top centering ring (did any one
think I'd build the kit stock). Kaplow Klips are next. I won't have it done
for MRFF this weekend, and will probably pick up with the project next week.
I should have it flying at the July NIRA launch, and at NARAM.

So far it looks like a nice kit. Infinite loop design, 3" tube, F through I
motors.

Thanks, Bob. I just did a quick count, and it looks like there are
actually only *13* prizes, not 14 as previously stated....

I did notice that Jerry Irvine offered an additional U.S. Rockets
"Banshee" or "Start" kit, however. If that prize is available to pick
from, I think I'd like to try one of his kits -- the "Banshee", in
particular, looks nice. I know I give Jerry a hard time online, and
I'd like to give him the chance to come through with a product I can
actually try. I promise to give it an honest, yet thorough review,
and post my conclusions online.

If I'm picking from the remaining 2 prizes, I'll take the Saturn Press
"In The Shadow of the V2" booklet, as I currently have enough 36"
parachutes. This is in no way a slight to Rocket Rage's chutes, by
the way -- Carl Delzell comes to all of the ROC launches, and he makes
some of the best chutes I've seen. I'm surprised nobody else has
snatched up this particular item -- I would, but, as I said, I don't
need another 36" chute right now....

I'd like to thank all of the vendors that donated prizes -- without
your generous contributions, this contest wouldn't have happened. I'd
also like to congratulate everyone else that entered the contest -- I
don't think there was a single entry that didn't show significant
creativity and resourcefulness. Kudos to everyone on some truly
original designs!

Finally, thanks to Bob Fortune, for putting in the MASSIVE amount of
time and effort it takes to run a contest like this. I'm sure I speak
for everyone when I say thank you for all that you have done -- this
contest truly would have gone NOWHERE without you shepherding it
along.

In this way I've posted reviews of the USR Interroc and ASP Kappa-9-M for
3x18mm cluster to EMRR. I've also from time to time posted reviews of products
I just plain liked on my own website. The Ignitorman kit from Descon 8 will
serve my "Vorpal Blade" L2 attempt next month and revive my beloved Hop on Pop
in the fall -- should get lots of local visibility; and both Hop on Pop and VB
could become magazine articles with a couple of successful flights.

So, yeah, it does happen.

Hey Rick,

The Shadow of the V-2 looks like a good read, excellent choice! I don't
have anything from Peter that I haven't read at least twice. Don't
forget to ask him to autograph your copy. Thanks for the kind words on
running the show, couldn't have done it without the people willing to
contribute their designs and the folks behind the scenes like Kevin and Dan.

There are 3 prizes remaining, the third is from Nano Rockets and Chris
Taylor but what the prize might be is anyone's guess. I can only assume
it's every kit Chris ever made, plus the contents of all his range
boxes, a couple of digital cameras, and his Jeep. I'm sure he'll want
to keep his Blackbirds. Hello, Chris, are you listening? It's getting
down to the wire here.

Maybe Jerry will kick in another prize for 15th place?

A couple things...
First, thanks to Bob for taking what is I'm sure A LOT of time to do the
contest, as well as thanks for the kudos on my Matzo Box. I didn't place,
but if it gave you (and others, I hope) a chuckle it was worth it....I mean
I didn't build it for parachute duration, that's for sure! Finally,
congrats to all the winners and thanks to the manufacturers for donating.
Actually, now Finally....how bout for the next theme "Barbie lofters?"
I built a nice rocket pack to loft my "Pretty-in-Plaid" Barbie which, alas,
didnt' perform too well as the flame retardant helmet didn't keep some of
her long blonde locks from getting melted...anyway...two other guys in our
section liked the idea so much that we are now working toward our
Barbie-lofting open (is it too late to submit this as a category for next
years pink book?). Seriously...getting her to fly well poses challenges, is
kind of neat, and is a great way to get our daughters involved (it is no
coincidence that the three guys in our group doing this all have daughters
under age 10!)
Anyway, thanks again Bob,

If Rick is correct, then I guess that makes me Lucky 13th. The oddroc
aficionado from Michigan, of course, will pass on Nano Kits, since I
prefer to design my own, and opt for the 36" Rocket Rage chute in
RED, of course. After all, isn't rage red? ;-)
I'd like to thank Bob for running the contest and all of the vendors that
contributed prizes. Your names are carved into my mind for the next
time I need to buy some goodies.
Special thanks to Rocket Rage for my 36" chute. I'll put it to good use,
maybe even in my next Descon Entry.
I'm as guilty as anyone in getting caught up in the negatives
associated with the hobby. It's nice to be involved in the positive
aspects of rocketry. We should all spend more time there.

Looks like a no, Jerry. I miscounted, and there was actually some
small print on the web site identifying some prize "to be determined"
from Chris Taylor's "Nano Rocketry" as a 14th prize. I'm getting the
"In The Shadow of the V-2" from Saturn Press, and have already sent
Peter Alway my address.

Thanks anyway! Maybe I'll get one in the next Descon, if you plan on
offering a prize again.

Jerry, this is a very generous offer!

However Dan Bihary, on seeing your offer Jerry, suggested that maybe
Rachel Clay would like this Banshee or Start rocket. Rachel came in
35th place with Firebutt but she had the highest ratio of people liking
her design versus it being comprised of found parts. It was 30 to 6 as
I read it. That's quite a feat for a 9 year old.

I know she would be tickled to death and, who knows, it would make for
an interesting review in emrr or rol or where ever, maybe even Sport Rocketry
magazine. This hobby is all about getting kids involved and what a
great way to start.

Well, her name is Amanda and she's just barely 8. Nevertheless she would love
it, especially if it's the Banshee (she likes LONG rockets), and I, as the dad,
deeply appreciate the thoughtfulness of those involved.

I'll see to it that the rocket is built correctly and to spec. We'll paint it
to Amanda's taste, so don't be surprised if it's pink and gold! It may be a
while before it flies, at least with more than a D12, because Miss A usually
doesn't go out into the desert with me for the weekend; but when it does, we'll
let you know how it likes an F20 or G38.

Thank you Jerry, Bob, and Dan!

I would be happy to put a properly built Banshee on the banshee web site too.
