I, for one, would like to see a French translation of many of the basic
terms surrounding our hobby. I regularly talk with francophones and,
while they often use the English word for many of the tecnical terms,
I'm still never sure about terminology.

Well, actually, your English is not that bad... :-)

Here it is for those that wanted to see:

Note that the specs are given in metric units, for you that don't know:

------------------------------------------------------------------------

25.4 mm = 1.00 inch

1.0 kg = 2.2 lbs (kind of - Kgs is really a unit of mass but is erroneously
commonly used as a measure of force)

4.54 litres = 1 Imperial Gallon; I don't know how many litres in a US gallon;
but I would guess about 3.85 or so.
At any rate, 1 litre is "about" a quart - it is a liquid measure.

1.00 cc = 0.001 litres.

degrees F = (9/5 (degrees Celcius)) + 32

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Technical Characteristics of TURBOREC T240:

- Small Turbojet engine for model aircraft in the 6 - 7 Kg range.
- Weight: 1.7 Kgs (Doesn't include regulator)
- Dimensions: Diameter 116mm, length 335mm.
- Thrust: 4 Kgs at 120,000 rpm.
- Thrust at idle: 0,4Kgs.
- Principal operation: light alloy centrifugal compressor. Turbine of heat
treated special steel.
- Exhaust Temperature (measured at tailpipe exit): 630 deg. Celcius
- Fuel: pressurized liquid propane
- Fuel Consupmtion Rate: 1.8kg / kg thrust / hour.
- Lubrication: Auto-feed oil system.
- Oil Consumption: 25cc / hour.

Construction:

- Outer casing: Heat treated light alloy (aluminum ???).
- Inner (hot) parts: Heat treated stainless alloy.
- Combustion Chamber: stainless steel
- High precision bearings on turbine shaft
- Starting by compressed air
- Ignition: single spark plug, Capacitive discharge electronics
- Sound pressure level (says "in flight" - means at full thrust I guess) : 72 DBa
(This is very quiet)

Cost per unit for Turborec T 240:

* Turborec T240 kit comprised of:
- 1 turbojet engine T240
- 1 electronic regulator (for fuel system)
- 1 fuel bottle for propane fuel (1 litre)
- All tubing and hardware required
- 1 well written (in French no doubt - maybe there's an opportunity here for me !!!)
set of instructions.
---> Price TTC : 18383 FF. (I don't know what TTC means - including tax ???)

* Accessories:
- 1 electronic ignition system <turbospark> : 1541 FF
- 1 stainless steel propane bottle, 1200cc, 3-way faucet: 1541 FF
- lightweight oil bottle, 135cc : 794 FF

Guarantee 1 year on parts and labour, period begins at date of delivery.

So I hope this helps.... bien merci, Yannick !!!!

PS. Hey Max, why did you have to clean out your engine ????? :-)

I went to a largish model show over the weekend, and the UK importer of the Turborec
was flying one as part of the display..

The plane was a Jim Fox Saab Viggen kit, pretty much standard, other than the
ducting had been redisigned to allow cooling air to pass over the engine..
The turborec fitted in quite nicely. The engine itself being pretty small. However
there's a lot of on board support equipment. The fuel tank is a very
substantial aluminuim affair, then there's the electronics module which houses
the microprocessor that controls the throttling rate.

The starting procedure consisted of connecting the thing up to what looked
like an aqualung to spin up the engine. Then once it was revving sufficiently
to ignite it... The whole process took around 20 seconds...

It took about the same run as a ducted fan to rotate, and appeared to fly
at a similar kind of speed... The most impressive thing was the sound,
absolutely beautiful. The next flying slot was taken by a couple of
regular ducted fans, BVMs and a BYRON F15, they sounded pretty silly by
comparison.

Considering the technology involved it looked pretty user friendly.. The
downside is here in the UK it costs **** 3300 ****. Needless to say there
wasn't a que at the stand to buy them....

cheers
