I'm a powered rc pilot looking for a little relaxing flying with
sailplanes..was looking at the GP Spectra..comes with Goldfire 550 motor.
Does anyone have one or flown it? Just wondering how good it is..
Also wondering if I can use standard servos in it..cause I really cant
afford to get mini servos. and how much the 6/7 battery packs are?

Just any info that I should know about getting into sailplanes is
appreciated...
Thx!

I'll vouch for that. I used this site as a model for the Master Airscrew
Gear/Motor/Prop combination I put in my Spectra and it made a lot of
difference.

You can use standard servos. It is designed for them.

My flying buddy has a Spectra. He has progressed to a 2.5:1 Master Airscrew
gearbox and 7 cells. Works real nice. Build it carefully and keep the
weight down as much as possible. Standard servos should work fine.
Enjoy....

I've been flying one for about a year. It climbs OK with direct drive, but
don't fly it with someone that has one with a geared motor - you'll waste
your batteries trying to outfly them :-)

If you have the building skills, I'd recommend you build it right the first
time with a gearbox.

Standard servos fit just fine. I'd recommend a 7 cell battery pack,
preferably 1700 mAh or better. Tower Hobbies sells a 7x1700 pack for $38
(DuraTrax Sanyo RC1700 7 Cell Flat Standard) that works great. You should
try your local R/C shop to see if they have them (mine only carries 6 cell
packs and singles - I've tried soldering batteries but I'd rather spend the
same amount of money on an already built pack). You can also get 7x2000
packs for about $60.

are these the same type of packs that Rc cars use? Some guy at the shop
tried to sell me some small battery packs..dynamite 600's or
something..but they had a plug like futaba or something on it..neveer seen
those used for motors..i figured he either didnt know what he was talking
about..or maybe I just don't know as much as I thought I did...any info?

A 600 pack may be good for a small motor, for example a feather weight

park flyer. But with the more common speed 600 motors I would use a
1700 mAh or bigger pack.
Also watch for the maximum current rating of the pack. I use SCR
versions for they are capable of supplying the high current a speed
600 motor requires (10+ amp).
Some packs are designed to deliver a small current over a long
period of time. These packs should not be used to drive a motor.
They are intended for radio's or other electronic equipment.
