I have spent too much time looking for information about this copter.
So I though it would be helpful to post a link.

The January 1970 article in American Aircraft Modeler is avaiable
through
http://members.cox.net/arrio2/old_historic.htm

About 1/2 way down the page is a link to a PDF of the article.

After looking over the plans and reading the first post at
http://www.mindspring.com/~thayer5/ffpages/testims/pennitm.html
I decided that ordering it was better than trying to build the complex
parts from scratch.

I have ordered one from Tower Hobbies. It is also available from
hobbypeople.net and some others.

To see what it looks like go to
http://www.mindspring.com/~thayer5/ffpages/models/ff2/penni.html

They are also available from Peck-Polymers.com which will take you to
the new owners, A2Z. I recently finished and flew the Penni helicopter.
It will go to the ceiling in the large gym we fly in...great fun and a
challenge too....

I saw a rubber powered helicopter fly at the model engineers exhibition
a few years bask and it was so stable almost looked like it had a gyro

This one is stable but kind of "random" when it comes to direction.
Early in the flight it will climb straight ahead, then it does some
tight 180 degree turns, then it gently circles and descends for a
landing. Each flight is different, and very entertaining...!

I built an ultralight "Jet Ranger"-type balsa shell body for mine and
added a lot of anhedral (negative coning angle) to the main rotor.
With tail-rotor twist I'd get extremely consistent flight, starting
straight and forward and tipping back for a perfect zero-speed landing.
It was so stable that with the fwd-speed producing profile balsa
"pilot" removed, it would hover and if you pushed it it would return to
the same place (it was part on a toriodal system of air with sufficient
mass and momentum to act as an elastic "cushion").
