I'm about to begin on my Dynaflite Super Cub and was thinking forward
to hinges. Are CA hinges acceptable for this plane, or should I be
thinking along the lines of metal pin hinges like Robart hingepoints
or maybe Dubro HD nylon?

David,
I have a 1/3 scale Super Cub also. I used the large Robart hong points at
all control surface. Their a little more difficult to get installed correctly
than the typical flat hinges but well worth the extra effort. I believe the
Dubro HD nylon is a flat hinge with a steel pin at the bearing. If I remember
correctly the metal hinge pins are not permenently installed and that you must
make sure that the right angle of the pin is installed into the bulsa slot or
you can loose the hinge pin. "Kleets" makes a large piano type hinge also that
is really good as the hinge pin fits the bearing of the hinge snugly and the
hinge pin is crimped at one end so it can't fall out.

Radio South still makes their giant scale hinges if you want to go with those.

I'm building another 1/4 scale (72") Fokker Dr.1, and I'm using regular CA
hinges this time, instead of the Robart Pin Points I used last time. My point
is: neither of these planes is a "turn and burn, throw it around" type. They
both fly slowly and do aerobatics "large and lazy". I think standard CA hinges
by Radio South or GP will be fine. Place them about 4" apart, and you'll have
plenty of support and strength.

Use the CA hinges but use the size that is appropriate for the size,
speed and weight of the model. I have taken a giant scale CA hinge and
CAed it in two pieces of spruce and lifted over 80 lbs without it
failing. I say 80 lbs because that is all the scale went up to. This
was not pinned either. Just make sure you drill a small hole in the
center of the slot to allow the CA to wick all the way to the back of
the hinge on both sides. We tried to lift the same weight with the
Dubro hinges (pinned) and they gave out at the plastic loops. So did
the large Robarts. These were all straight (gravity) lifts with no
sudden movements. CA hinges when properly done out perform thier
counterparts.

Other way.

Klet has the pin that falls out and the Dubro one is crimped.

I dunno 'bout the Dynaflite kit, but I do know about the Balsa U.S.A. 1/3
scale Cub kit . . .

(MAN, IS >THAT< A PILE OF LUMBER !
[Zarf !])

Cub ailerons are _large_ and generate considerable force when fully
deflected. You might well consider the Robart-type hinges in the giant
size.

At any rate, BUSA now offer a scale aileron kit to supplant the 'model-type'
ailerons in the standard
kit, and those hinges are fabricated by the builder using the materials
supplied in the optional scale aileron kit.

If you're interested in scale ailerons, you can buy just the plans from
Balsa U.S.A. and build them from scratch.
Not terribly complicated, if you can work from plans alone. The ailerons
themselves are obviously different (Friese ailerons), and the wings are
modified to accept the scale ailerons as well, so you'll need the wing plan
sheet too.. Dunno how much they cost when purchased separately.

FWIW.

CA hinges will work, but if you want to be sure of hinge longivity, Robert
hinge points are the best. I use them exclusively on all my bige gas powered
planes and I have never had a failure..... Happy Landings!
