I just got my hands on an old quadra engine. It has been moderately used and
has been sitting on a shelf gathering dust for a couple years. It has a spring
starter and has a 18x10 Zinger prop attached. I need to know the displacement,
the model, and perhaps the horsepower.
The serial number is 410790 and it has a walbro carbuerator if this helps. I
have to get it started. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One more stupid question: When I ground the spark plug and turn the prop over,
shouldn't I see a spark?

Many Many thnaks in advance,

Randy

The old Quadra was 35cc displacement around 2 HP. Not a bad engine for its
era, and still good for relaxed flying today.

I had to clean the points on my old quadra to get it to fire after a several
year layup. I wish I had a spring starter, I'm jealous. Ed from East Texas

Randy, 1st I do own and operate the Quadra engines, so what I tell you is from
the front end. Ist use some cleaning sonvent and get the crud of the
exterior, purchase a new spark plug regardless of the visiable looks, go to a
lawn and tractor repair shop and they will fix you up, there is anew screen for
the carb which is much corser mesh and works much better than the stock unit
that came with your engine, have the repair shop show you how to take the cab
apart to clean the screen (this is very important as the sis vey fine and will
plug up easily, I suggest that you in stall a filter on your spply can and not
another one in the line, use fuel line for gas as others will disolve and
really screwup things. Take some 600 emery paper and clean the magneto and wipe
it clean with solvent. grease the bearing and spring of the starter, this is
very important the prop you have is ok but be sure you release the tension and
then retighten using a wrench that fits and retighten after a short run period.
as to seeing a spark on the plug you will see this only when you wind the
starter and with plug out, you'll see plenty of spark, your repair shop will
have the parts for the points and I would sggest yo buy an extra set, the are
cheap and last a long time, the key word here is alignment, make sure the
points match up and are not cocked. Fuel that turkey up with premium gas and
32-1 oil like you use in a chain saw or leaf blower. Make damn sure you have a
shut off switch as when these turkeys fire off they mean business and can harm
you very bad, clear away from the front as a thrown prop can really hurt you.
These engines are not toys and should be treated with due respect.
I hope I have helped you and you can reach me as rcfl...@nwlink.com, I profess
to be a R/C consultant (Retired)
Make a friend of your local repair shop as he has all the parts and know how of
these engines. Good luck Gimpy (Marc Freer)
