Well I finally got time on my hands to build Clancy Avition big lazy
bee with extended wings I bought over 5 years ago. All my other
planes are glow plug but I am considering possibly giving electric a
try and was wondering what would be the best recommendation for power
package. I realize that it will be a bit more expensive initialy
since I'll have to buy everything but I want to give it a very serious
try and would like to end up with equipment that would be good enough
to be used with other planes down the road.

Thanks for any input.

The size and projected weight would determine what would be the best
motor/speedcontrol/battery combination.
I have no personal experience with the lazy bee, but you could try the RC
Groups descussion board at:

I'm sure someone in the sports plane forum could give you more in depth
advice on this.

I built the 48" Lazy Bee two years ago and fly it on a Magnetic Mayhem
Reverse, 8 - 2000mah Nicads, a Master Airscrew 2.5 : 1 gearbox, and use an
11 x 7 MAS Electric prop. I is a good performer, lazy manoeuvres and just a
lot of fun to fly. The M.M. draws about 21 amps with this set-up. Lazy
flying give me about 8 minutes of flight time plus taxi in and off the
runway. I fly off a grass field with the specified Trexler tires. I used a
light version of a covering material -- aerospan, and would not recommend
it. I found that it splits very easily, even handling it causes tears or
splits of the covering. I would use a stronger material -- a light weight
Mylar type -- Ultracote Lite, etc.
A good all around fun model.

I just called Andy Clancy to see if he had any recommendation for you.
His reply was:

On the low end cost wise, but good performance, a Graupner geared Speed
700.

For a mid tier with better performance, and reliability, an Astroflight
geared 25 Cobalt.

For best performance, versatility, durability, reliability, and fun, go
brushless, for which Andy recommends you call Sean Plummer at Aero Model
for advice on Hacker models (http://www.hackerbrushless.com, phone
480-726-7519).

Not sure how the Astroflight compares to the Hacker cost wise.
Personally, I know there is a lot of magic to be found in a Hacker.

The Graupner/Astroflight/Hacker dealers will be able to advise you on
speed controls and flight packs.

Be sure to check out the International Lazy Bee Heompage:

http://lazybee.welcomes-you.com/index.html

I do have the same Beast sitting on the shelf, awaiting completion.
And I'm too unsure what size of motor to use. Somebody recommended
a 700, I thinks that's to big ( read heavy ) by far. The Mainstream on
the cheap side should be 550 to 600, preferrably geared.
Another option, though not exactly cheap is a brushless, but that's
really not necessary for that type of plane. As always YMMV.

I know that Clancy's models are now marketed by Hobby People. He used to
market plan sets for his models. I asked HP if they were going to market
his plan sets and they said they didn't know. I doubt they will. Does
anyone know if the plans for the Bee series are available anywhere? Thanks.

I called Andy Clancy to get your answer. He said that Hobby People and
Global dealers intend to carry the plans, but they haven't gotten those
details worked out yet. First priority was to get the kits in stock,
which most of them are now available. In the mean time, feel free to
call Clancy Aviation at 480-649-1534 and he will get you plans.

Anyone else with a question for Andy? I love a good excuse to give him
a call! Perhaps a really difficult question so that I have to go over
and visit in person!!!!
