Melasma. Being out in the sun can make those brown to gray-brown patches on your face more noticeable.

There are things you can do to make it less noticeable even during the summer, Melasma: Tips for managing.

Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans, of which the majority spills out from rivers. A portion of this plastic travels to ocean garbage patches, where it gets caught in a vortex of circulating currents alongside plastic from other sources (e.g. offshore fishing activities). If no action is taken, plastic will increasingly impact our ecosystems, health, and economies.

A storm will develop, intensify and lift northward from the southern Plains to the Great Lakes over the next two days. The weather hazards of most concern today are severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, isolated large hail and tornadoes and heavy rain with possible flooding in the Lower Mississippi Valley and Mid South. Then on Thursday, a zone of heavy snow may fall in Iowa and Wisconsin. Read More >

ALERT- Automated Local Event Reporting in Real Time. Network of automatic raingauges that transmit via VHF radio link when precipitation occurs. Some sites are also equipped with other sensors such as temperature, wind, pressure, river stage or tide level.

DAMBREAK FLOODING - Dambreaks present a unique flood warning problem. Dams may erode and empty relatively slowly. In these situations, when river forecasts are available, flood warnings and flood statements are used. Dams may also fail catastrophically during a heavy rainfall event or earthquake, resulting in a very dangerous flash flood-type situation. For these events, Flash Flood watches, warnings and statements will be used. Similar action may be required for the failure of certain levees.

ENTRAINED / ENTRAINMENT- Refers to the drawing in of moisture (or lack of moisture) into a system. Dry air entrainment into the mid levels of a thunderstorm can enhance the potential for damaging wind gusts. Moisture being entrained into a storm system can enhance precipitation amounts.

RING OF FIRE- This refers to thunderstorms and rain across the edges of a high pressure ridge. If a ridge occurs across the central US in summer, the ring of fire will extend across the west coast, up into Canada and across the east coast. Underneath the main core of the ridge weather will be stable.

SLEET - Solid grains of ice which form from the freezing of raindrops or the refreezing of melted snowflakes. These small, transparent ice pellets usually bounce when they hit a hard surface.

THUNDERSTORM (TS, TSRA, TSTM) - A shower accompanied by thunder. It is always accompanied by lightning and thunder, and occasionally by strong gusty winds, hail, and or heavy rain.

WALL CLOUD -An isolated lowering of a cloud that is attached to the rain-free base of a thunderstorm, generally to the rear of the visible precipitation area. Wall clouds indicate the updraft of or the inflow to a thunderstorm.

WIND ADVISORY - Sustained winds 25 to 39 mph and/or gusts to 57 mph. Issuance is normally site specific. However, winds of this magnitude occurring over an area that frequently experiences such winds (e.g., the normal strong summertime winds near the San Francisco Bay, would not require the issuance of this product).

For many Australians, summer means outdoor activities. Many people get sunburn during the summer months and sun safety is important for all of us. But aside from sunburn, some people may get other rashes.

In some people, exposure to the sun in the spring or early summer can trigger an itchy, red rash on the front of the neck, chest and the arms and thighs called polymorphous light eruption (PMLE). It usually clears without treatment in a few days, although it can come back.

Many people with chronic skin conditions may find their symptoms worsen during summer. You should see your doctor if you have an ongoing skin problem that is worsened by heat and sunlight. People with these conditions may need to take special precautions. Examples of chronic skin conditions include:

Day neutral and ever-bearing types begin flowering around the same time in the spring and take about the same time between flowering and harvest. The difference is that they keep flowering through the summer months.

It's a good idea to work some well-rotted compost into the soil before planting. Compost helps add nutrients to the soil, improves drainage and increases microbial activity, all of which will benefit the plants.

Day neutral plants flower and fruit throughout the summer. If plants are not growing well, applying compost along the side of the plants will give them a boost of nitrogen. Other organic fertilizers such as blood meal can be used too.

If plants are grown in rows, renovation is a good time to thin widening rows back to their original width. This will improve airflow through the patch and reduce the time that the leaf surfaces are wet, which can reduce disease severity.

Choose sites with full sun, good soil drainage and air circulation. Fungi require long periods of continuous wetness to infect plants. Any practice that promotes quick drying of leaves and fruit will reduce disease.

Fungicides may be needed to protect fruit from gray mold fruit rot in years where rainy wet weather persists while plants are in bloom. In this case, fungicides should be applied during blossom to prevent fruit rot.

If possible watch the weather and spray before rain is predicted. Fungicides with copper or Captan as active ingredients will reduce gray mold fruit rot in strawberry when applied properly. Fungicide sprays applied to green fruit and during fruit harvest do little to reduce disease and are not recommended.

This disease is a complex problem involving several different pathogens (Rhizoctonia fragariae, Pythium spp., Fusarium spp.) along with a variety of plant stresses such as winter injury. It is common in older strawberry patches or patches stressed by poor growing conditions like soil compaction or poor drainage.

Fungicide sprays may be necessary to protect plants after summer renovation if powdery mildew has been identified in the patch before renovation. Several fungicides are available to control powdery mildew. Choose products with an active ingredient of myclobutanil, sulfur, potassium bicarbonate, or horticultural oil. Apply products according to the label instructions. Repeated applications will be necessary as long as conditions favorable for disease continue. Do not use sulfur on fruit intended for canning.

We are heading to Orlando Oct. 1. Last time I went to Orlando in the fall was in 1985. We waited and waited for Gloria to hit Florida-it was going to be a direct hit -Hurricane 3 ( I think )!
Well.. needless to say it made landfall in our home state of Massachusetts. So, we are still heading to Orlando on Oct 1 and hopefully just play in the rain.

During summer, more than 500 rose bushes, representing 150 different varieties, burst into bloom at Filoli. Find Horticulturist Rob Joice on this virtual tour as he shows us some tips and tricks for rose care, and teaches us about a few varieties you can find on your next visit.

After reading many websites and reviews, we looked at the top-rated and best-selling rain pant models that were widely available. We took that list of top models and narrowed the group based on the following criteria:

In 2019 and 2022, we first tried on all the rain pants to observe how easy they were to move around in, how comfortable they were, how loud and swishy the fabric was, how easy they were to get on and off, and how well they fit.

After heavy summer rain (July and August) or winter snow (December through March), expect impassable backcountry roads. If clear skies abound after the rain or snow, then it is often just a matter of days until the sun dries everything out. Sometimes, heavy rain or melting snow can lead to flooding, which can cause erosion of the roadbed and can delay access.

Finally, consider elevation of the road that you will be travelling on, especially during the winter months. Roads in the 6,500 to 8,000 foot range may be impassable due to a snowpack, where lower elevations roads (below 6,000 feet) will see deteriorated road conditions due to rain.

Grandview Trail: The Grandview Trail has several major trail washouts from the heavy summer rains of 2021. They occur in the traverse section above Horseshoe Mesa. Page Spring trail is also eroded with loose footing and exposure to steep drop-offs. Use caution. Cottonwood Creek has major blowouts in the bed of the creek, wiping out most of the campsites.

The National Park Service urges SPECIAL CAUTION for all hikers during the summer months. Individual days can reach a high of 115F (46C) or higher. These temperatures are beyond unpleasant or uncomfortable-they are, in fact, dangerous and if you fail to factor the heat into your plans the results could be tragic.
