I just bought a framed-up Smith Miniplane (.40-size, from the Sig kit)
from a friend of mine. He didn't have the plans for it any more. Is
there some kind soul out there with one who could tell me just where
the CG is supposed to be?

Thanks, Gary

Sorry, I don't have information about the CG but I really like to
hear comments from all of you who has built or flown this model.
I'm thinking of buying the kit myself.

Thanks,

/Thomas

OK, the Smith Miniplane. The balancing point is about 3/16 of an inch
back from the front of the bottom wing. I balanced mine there, and it
fies great!!! I have an OS .40 SF ABC on the front of it, and it does
OK, would be more interesting with a good .46 on it.

I'm assuming you also need the control surface throws. They are:
Rudder: 1 inch left, and 1 inch right
Elevator: 5/8 inch up, and 5/8 inch down
Ailerons: 1/2 inch up, and 1/2 inch down

I put some down thrust on the engine because the plane tends to climb on
full trottle; this seemed to help stop this. The plans do not call for
it though.

Hope this helps. If you need anymore information let me know.

I have built, but not flown, this plane (still working on those flying
skills!). A guy at a club I used to belong to had one and it flew very
well. I don't have the instructions in front of me, but I recall that
the CG is to be located at the leading edge of the lower wing. I can
check at home for certain. The kit is definitely a "builder's kit" - it
took me most of a year working on-and-off to finish it. The instructions
are very good quality, as are the materials. But there's just a lot to
do!

Based on a recommendation from someone who had gone through several, I
put the CG right at the leading edge of the bottom wing. I had a OS
61 4-stroke. The plane flew great. I even went out and bought
another kit when my orginal crashed. Still haven't put the new one
together yet.

This is the Mini Bipe, right?

I got a comment that ought to get people asking "so why the hell did
he bother saying *anything* ? "

Hopefully this will jog another's memory.

There is a re-positioning of the upper wing to make the Smith Mini
bi-plane a great flyer. I believe it was 1/4 inch forward.

Again, sorry for 'rumor', hopefully someone can confirm or refute

I don't recall where the plans say the cg should be,
but about 1/2 inch behind then leading edge of the lower wing is a good
starting point.

I have had 2 Mini planes over the last 10 years. It is your typical
squirrely little bi-plane. Lots of fun to fly. Good in wind. Will
probably need nose weight so use a big engine. I have a Fox 45 in
mine. It has poor outside performance due to its almost flat airfoil.
If it hunts during stright level flight try alittle neg incidence on
the upper wing. 1/16 inch shims under the rear cabine and n-struts do
the job.

Happy Flying,

Let me reconsider, if you have never flown a small bi-plane like the
mini plane 1/2 inch may be too far back. Try balancing it at the
leading edge of the lower wing and then work you way back.
