It was such fun to get to show off the new Extra, after a year of silence and
many, many hours of hard work, to truly, finally, unveil her, to prove that she
really DOES weigh just 20 lbs on the 8 1/2 lb MacMinarelli 85cc engine with a
100.5" span...to hand people the 14 oz wing panel (covered with servo and
linkage), and watch their reactions.....I wish I could share it with
EVERYBODY....what a wonderfully fun weekend it was!!!!
So, I just wanted to take a moment to say THANKS to everyone who came to say
hi, and esp those who listened to me ramble about the big plane just because of
my excitement! :-)
Sincerely,
Mrs. AnnMarie Cross

You hit the nail on the head.....I spoke to a young man and his dad who fully
intend to get the aircraft to 15 POUNDS on 100.5" wing!!! The macminarelli
powered birds (both of them) are carrying several ounces of tailweight to
balance the engines. The aircraft, built stock, requires about 5 lbs on the
nose at the minimum -- 5 lb TOTAL that is...exhaust, ignition, prop, spinner.
We anticipate with an engine like the smaller BMEs you would need some
noseweight after moving radio gear forward in that huge fuselage....there's
TONS of room for flexibility.
The aircraft at the show was production parts...the plant cuts us 2 samples
from standard, stock wood and provides them to us for 2 check builds. This was
not AT ALL hand selected wood, in fact, if anything it was the reverse as check
kits typically get built with the wood that does not pass QC for kit cutting.
This kit does not have anything to cut and carve other than leading edges....it
is all light by engineering, full span sheer webs, etc....so there is little to
through the flying weight off. This design is like the wing of the Giles wing,
and we've had VERY VERY few folks say they came out overweight on that aircraft
for similar reasons.
This aircraft has been built by 3 different builders now, one who normally
builds rather heavily. BY CHANGING NOTHING in the design he still came in
within our recommended weight range at 21 lbs WITH THE MAC 85 cc! On a
smaller, lighter engine it is VERY possible to come in under our weight range.
Last thought -- becuase she is so lightweight the smaller engines are really
viable in the aircraft. With the Mac 70cc, at 19 lbs ready for fuel, twin
spinning a meijlick 24x8 at 7000 RPM the plane can torque roll and climb out.
With the Mac 85cc, she has enough to torque roll, climb out, and perform a
vertical snap and keep going after about 5-6 plane lengths to pick up speed.

<<AnnMarie..a BME 2.7 weighs 3 lbs...5 lbs less than the macanerelli
....does this mean I could come out with a 100" plane weighing 15
lbs!!!!...or would a lot of nose weight be needed ? Is there any way to
calculate this?..was your prototype at the show using a stock kit or hnd
selected wood? I have built many planes with low advertised weights but
could not get the results without scrapping half the wood
supplied!!....George

Thanks for taking the time to talk to me and others. You are one of the
reasons we continue to support the products lines you represent! With
similar products being produced by multiple companies, as well as commodity
pricing, most often the only distinguishing factor is Customer Service.
I equate you to outstanding Customer Service.

for those of you who have never met me, I want to tell a funny Toledo story....
the power went out in our booth several times Saturday morning. One of our
reviewers was in the booth at hte time...and he joked to the person in charge
of our booth that perhaps if I shined a little brighter we wouldn't need the
power....the response was....
"if she shines any brighter someone is going to KILL HER!"
