I have a student that purchased a Hangar 9 trainer ARF that comes with
everything installed, including an MDS .40.

It was running fine until it had about .9 of a gallon of Omega 10% through
it when it would start dying at full throttle no matter what the needle
valve setting, glow plug type. Checked the tank, checked for debris in the
carb, etc. Still will not run at full throttle.

Changed the fuel to Byron 10% and all the problems went away. We flew the
plane four more times, a total of 50 minutes of flight time with no
problems. Idles great and has plenty of power.

This may or may not solve similar problems you may be having with your MDS
engine. At least for the engine owned by my student pilot, it looks like it
prefers Byron 10%.

Jeff, was that the Xtra Easy?

Jerry
There are three kinds of modelers, those who can count, and those who can't!

That nine tenths bit makes me wonder if you got a load of moisture in the
old fuel and that is why it won't run. That would also be why the new
Byrons stuff would, the fact that it is new and has no moisture. Check how
the fuel is stored, a lot of folks do not understand that air tight means no
openings.

Good luck,

Jim:

Great point. Time will tell if Byron is the real answer to this problem or
if the Omega fuel had moisture in it.

What was most interesting about this problem was that the plane flew fine
for two 15 minute flights ( within one hour) on the Omega, then on the next
fill-up the engine started acting up. Really strange.

Yep! Air tight means "cap tight." Store fuel with the original screw-on
cap tightly installed -- not with the fueler equipment still hooked up the
jug.

>Hello Jeff, I have a student with the same set up omega 10% MDS 40 etc., after
break-in and 12 flights on the engine it would not hold a needle setting,
blowing dark oil out the exhaust, well he sent the engine back to MDS and they
found that the front bearing was leaking air and the connecting rod had
wallowed out !!after 12 flights!!, good thing they sent back a brand new 48fs
pro, great support. New engine has same fuel and runs great with more than 12
flight now, still not as powerful as a OS or a Supertigre but not a bad sport
motor, also i've been flying for over 6 years now and thats the only fuel I use
with excellent results( No I don't work for the company) lol, just my 2 cents
worth, could be moisture could be the begining of the end of the engine , just
keep an eye on everything, Happy Flying.. Richatrd W.P.B.Fla

You know, my student's first MDS engine had to be sent back to Horizon
because it was doing the exact same thing. They replaced the engine with
the one he has now.

Yeah...time will tell on this fuel thing. My OS engines drink Omega 10% and
15% just fine. Also run great on Byron, SIG and Wildcat. Seems like they
really don't care what fuel I use.

Since we have a few of these MDS engines around the club I belong, I am now
really interested in monitoring anything posted on the newsgroup about MDS
fixes.

Keep us up-to-date on how your student's MDS holds up.

Yep! I checked on this and learned that my student does have the new
muffler that is supposed to fix the pressure problem.

Horizon Hobby's web site has instructions on how MDS owners can exchange the
old muffler for the new and improved muffler.

With almost 300 messages this evening, I wonder if any of you go flying any
more! LOL The weather was PERFECT and the hardest thing I did this weekend
was stop at the end of the day. Sure wanted to just turn on the lights and
continue flying!

Jeff, it sure sounds like you stay on top more often than not.
Congratulations sir,

Oooops! Sorry Dave. Forgot to include the website information. But bad
news. It looks like the return offer was good only until August 31, 2000.

Here's the webpage:
http://www.horizonhobby.com/Description.asp?prod=MDS02800370&ThisPage=&Categ
ory=P&item=&refer=

and here is the text from the page that explains the muffler return program:

"MKII Series Mufflers will be included with all new MDS .28 and larger
displacement engines shipped as of February 1,2000. For MDS Pro Series
engine owners who would like to give the new MKII Mufflers a try, send your
old MDS muffler and your credit card information, cashiers check, or money
order for $5.00 shipping and handling charges to: Horizon Hobby, Inc., Attn:
MDS Muffler Exchange, 4105 Fieldstone Rd., Champaign, IL, 61822. We'll send
you the new smaller, lighter, and quieter MKII Muffler. What a deal! Offer

Hi James,
I went to our field this Sat and there was nobody there. At present I don't
have an airworthy model - several crashes recently and not time to build -
so I depend on others for my ammusement. Sadly this Sunday was bad, rain all
day with 20 knot wind, not conducive to enjoyable flying. Today Monday,
there was the possibility of flying however the wind was up to 25 knots and
rain until 3pm.
Jonathan Lowe.
My sig file tends to cause outlook express to hang.
