Hi:
I'm getting ready to build a phaeton 90 Bi plane from Balsa USA. I'd
really appreciate some help with deciding what engine to use with it.
I was thinking of an OS 91 Surpass, but was told that was the minimum
to use. I would rather be midway between minimum and maximum. I was
also thinking of going gas but the rep at Balsa USA said I would have
to check the dimensions of the gas engines to see if they would fit.
Has anyone used a gas engine with the 90? US engines has a 25cc gas
engine but I haven't heard much about them. I like the sound of a 4
stroke but an OS 120 surpass is too expensive. How about the big glow
engines. Like the Supertigre 3550. It's got a good price, I don't
think it sounds like a 4 stroke , and how is it on fuel. Will I have
to sell the wife and kids to keep it running? Thanks.

A friend of mine has an old presurpass OS 120 on his . I flies nice no
speed demon but its not short of power either . Kinda like a big biplane
Kadet senior . I have seen one of these engines advertised on the web
somewhere ( i dont remember where ) for a resonable price . Jim Hiemstra

A YS-120 fly's the 90 great. The US Engine you are thinking about
will work OK. My brother has one in his. He had to increase the width
of fuselage by one inch and shorten the nose several inches because of
weight. If you want to make a few mods to the Phaeton add alierons to
the top wing, increase elevator and rudder area, make the vertical
fin straight up instead of swept back (gives better rudder authority)
Put a Strong 120 four stroke up front . It will put a smile on your
face when you fly it. It flies slow and easy but will do some nice
aerobatics. It is not a Ultimate or Jungman but it is still a lot of fun.

I have seen Phaeton 90's powered with OS 1.08's up to Quadra 42's. The 1.08
powered ones fly very nicely, do all the tricks except hover. If you are into
hovering, torque rolls, a gas engine like a Q42 or a Zenoah G38 may be the
answer. If it were mine, I'd go with the OS 1.08 or maybe a 1.20 webra or
equivalent. These engines fit nicely, and keep the overall weight down.

Good Luck,

Tony

Tony,

Do you know what modifacations (if any) were don't to the Phaeton with the larger
gas engine? I have one (With an old OS Gemini I 1.20) and want to go to Quadra
35.

Any ideas?

BTW, I posted this question about a week ago. I was quite amazed that I received
ZERO replies!!

Thanks.
Bill

Bill, I have a Pheaton 90 powered by a 25 cc Homelite and it is a great flyer.
Another member of our club has the same combination. The engine fits on the
firewall and the only mods were to move the firewall back one inch to allow for
the extra weight. If you are interested in the Homelite, I can supply you with
a new one , with muffler, throttle linkage and muffler for $125.00 plus
shipping. I have converted over 70 of theses type engines and with no
complaints. Good luck on your project.
