As an enthusiast who's been out of touch for some ten years... Can anyone
tell me if AHM is still around or what may have happened to them? Just
curious since I have alot of their stuff from 15 years ago. Thanks :)

Actually, much of the old AHM stuff is floating around in other
companies these days.... usually for much inflated prices!! (The newest
price on Rivarossi's rerelease of the 2-8-8-2 is $259 (?). I'll show ya
an ad with one for $39.99 ... LIST!

IHC does indeed have more of the stuff than anybody, tho. And, to
correct the last poster: the SD40 (with 8 wheel drive) is an old AHM
veteran!! It's drive is similar to the Model Power C628 and RS11, which
were made by the same firm.

As others have said, IHC is the current incarnation of AHM. They have
also been called General Hobbies and even Rivarossi USA for a while. They
were called something else before AHM, but the name escapes me. All owned
by the same guy, Bernie Paul.

I have never understood this company. They have a large line of very good
products. (OK, some not-so-good, too.) Unfortunately, they periodically
run into business problems.

Are the AHM locos decent? I just purchased one from someone as it was
pretty cheap and it was in the road I wanted.

John, It depends on the model. Most of the steam locos were good for the
time they were produced. Diesels ranged from poor to good, depending on
the model and when it was made. Nothing AHM was ever GREAT by today's
standards, but if you're satisfied with what you got, then it's OK.

Depends. AHM was never a manufacturer, just an importer. Most of the
steam locos sold under the AHM name were made by Rivarossi, and are on
par with all but the most recent (improved) offerings from that
company. Light weight, pizza-cutter flanges, wobbly-running, but good
looking and remarkably durable in spite of their flimsy feel. Among
the diesels, the U25C, E8, and Krauss-Maffei diesels were made by
Rivarossi, most of the rest were made by Mehano in Yugoslavia.

Rivarossi is imported today by a company called Model Expo, and their
new run steam engines (particularly the Big Boy and Challenger) are
much improved. The only Rivarossi diesel currently available is the
C420, which is the old MRC/Lima model. Not bad but not fantastic
either. AHM in its new incarnation IHC continues to import the
Slovenian-made Mehano stuff and some of it is decent running, although
sparsely detailed. I'd stay away from the diesels though.

IHC also imports what appears to be Slovenian-made versions of the
Rivarossi passenger cars. They seem to be identical except for the
lack of the Rivarossi name engraved on them. Rivarossi still sells
the same line of passenger cars through Model Expo, but with better
paint jobs.

On the Union Pacific Excursion cars, they finally got the color right,
but the cars look like they were dipped in paint rather than sprayed.
