How do you grind ground foam? I've tried a pepper mill and an antique coffee
grinder, all to no avail.

How coarse? What are you starting with? I've saved tons of mnoney getting a
big bag of the clump foliage that WS makes and using a blender to make coarse
ground foam. You get a number of pieces that wont come apart, which are
commonly called shrubs, so they do not go to waste. For finer foam, blend
longer and faster and sieve out the real fine stuff as you get it.

The other posts are correct. Use a blender. However, they didn't mention
2 very important instructions.

#1 Spray the inside of the blender with an antistatic cleaner or it will
stick to everything including your hand. What a mess.

#2 Don't let your wife catch you using the new blender that you so
proudly gave her. Beleve me. It's not a pretty sight. I could walk
upright before I got caught.

PS: #2 is more important than #1.

I have no trouble grinding ground foam, it's the un-ground foam that gives
me fits.

I take the chunk of foam and a list of sizes, colors, and quantities to
Eastside Trains, along with a couple of twenties. I'm sure you could mail
yours in. It may cost a lot but the results are excellent, you won't even
recognize your old foam.

BTW, why do you want to grind ground foam? Isn't that kind of like buying a
hot water heater?

I would try an old but STRONG electric food blender.I have an old one that I
bought at a garage sale for this very purpose.I do hear that the foam will wear
them out very quickly.I haven't used it yet,and I reckon to get finer
granules, you either leave it in there for longer,or get a different blade....

It juliannes,it dices, cuts, and it grinds bed foam into really nice lumps..

Andrew.

If you put the foam in a blender, won't you get BLENDED foam? 'Course you
could hit the "puree" button.

I use an old fashioned sausage grinder. It has a hand crank and
different settings for different size chunks.

At our club we found the best way was to use a wire wheel mounted in a
drill motor clamped in a vise. Protect the walls with plastic tarps and
tape a collection bag to the workbench.

I also purchased an old fashioned meat grinder, hand powered, and it works
very well for various types of foam. I then used "Rit" dye as well as other
types of coloring pigments and dyes to color the result. I then classify
the foam as to various sizes and colors. This will produce good material
without promoting wrath from "She who must be obeyed!"

I've used a fine cheese grinder and a block of hard wood.
I've even added water to the foam and froze it in the plastic ice trays.
Later I just ran it in the blender.
I also tried grinding it up between two course sheets of emery cloth that
were glued to blocks. Like using 2 large cement floats as a hand grinder.
I have also experimented with using fibre or wire grinding wheels. The
higher the RPM and or the finer the wire , the finer the foam grade.
The Emery and floats was the neatest , but leaves the carbide in the mix. A
Light blow of air usually seperated the grit .

I have seen very good results from putting chunks of foam along with
water in a blender - or has someone already suggested this?

Soak in latex paint first to color it. Let dry completly thru. Then
the wire wheel. Sift for fineness.

Yes, use a blender, I use two at once and have done buckets of the stuff. Use
latex foam only like found in old furinture, tear off about 1 inch square's and
put it in the first blender, this will blend it course then dump it in the
second one and blend it into fine ground foam while you reload the first and do
it again. its like a production line. you can grind alot of foam in little
time. Grinding foam in a blender will wear it out, and get only the blenders
with glass containers the plastic one gets soft from the heat of grinding foam
and the bearing get loose. I find them at garage sales for around $5-8.00 each.
Dye with Rite liquid dyes. They work best and heat the water, it make the dye
set better.

Even better; find a blender at a garage sale/flea mkt.(Or buy the wife a
new one.) Cut REAL foam rubber in 1"x1" chunks. DO NOT use synthetic
rubber, as it will melt and become a gooey mess
You can use RIT dye on the chunks and let it dry before blending/grinding.
Old sofa cushions that are deteriorating may be a good source of foam
rubber.

You can also buy it at craft stores where it is sold for making
stuffed animals and fancy pillows. In fact my wife buys it at WalMart. I
always encourage her to keep a good supply on hand. It helps to keep my
modeling budget under control. Sure wish she'd find a craft project that
required HO diesel equipment.<g>

I bet Big John has at least one of them egg-crate lookin' foam bed
thingies... That oughta make lots of ground foam...

Hey, Big John, you'd better rescue that thing before the goats eat it...
Wait! On second thought, you could wait and start collecting Foam Goat
Dopplers...

FGD Scenery, Inc.

WOW! What a concept!

Just don't go lettin' 'em drink none of that moonshine... It'd probably
melt the foam, just like MEK...

An easy way is to run the foam through a meat grinder for coarse foam.
For finer foam, run foam through a blinder on the highest setting, ie
Liquefy setting.
