Hi

The E&C Shops coal gons are great. I have just purchased a 12 pack of KCLX (Kansas City Power and Light
Company) cars, the first of many 12 pack's.

What I need to know, are the general things like what color the Stirrup Steps, Brake Wheel, Truck Side frames,
etc.... are painted. Any info would be great even the number series for these cars.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the kind words about our cars. As to your questions, how's
this.

Kansas City Power & Light (KCLX) has three series of Johnstown America
Coalporters® serving the three different power plants:

1) Hawthorne - Series #'s 395003 to 395125. They also have 3 double
rotaries #'s 305001 & 395002. These cars have a "power plant" logo
stencil and black letters KCPL on the side. This is the series we
released commercially (see below).

2) Iatan - Series #'s 595004 to 595250 and 3 double rotaries #'s
505001 to 595003. These cars have a "IATAN" logo stencil and black
letters KCPL/SJLP & EDEC on the side.

3) La Cygne - Series #'s 795005 to 795375 and 4 double rotaries #'s
795001 to 795004. These cars have a "Swan" logo stencil and black
letters KCPL-KGE on the side.

The loads for these cars originate at the Black Thunder or Cabello
Mines in the Powder River Region in Wyoming. Initially, BN pulls the
cars and interchanges them with KCS at Kansas City for the final run
to the plants. This information was supplied by KCP&L and was
accurate in March '95.

We produced all three cars. However, the Iatan and La Cygne cars were
produced only as a small special run for KCP&L employees (each plant
wanted cars for their operation). The Hawthorne cars were produced
for general release. If we do a rerun, we probably will do the La
Cygne cars.

All these cars have the same orange rotary end, black brake wheel &
mechanism, and black stirrup steps. The area under the slope sheets,
including the lattice work, on both end is black. This is something
we did not do on the cars because of the complexity of the required
production paint masks. It would be a good touch for the advanced
modeler to distinguish his models.

I wish I could post a picture of these cars but I do not have scans of
them (we don't own a scanner). The painting and lettering is correct
for the car except as noted above. Any other questions, drop me an
e-mail at r...@rosenet.net.
