There are two UK books both by Iain Rice. One was published by Wild Swan
a few years ago and the other has *just* come out from the new UK
publishing company "Railmodel Digest" or very similar. I can't remember
the titles but the UK railway agazines carry ads for them or call Motor
Books.

If you want more info. I will try and rememebr to post it here tomorrow
give me a nudge if I don't.

Do you have access to lots and lots of U.S. model railroad magazines?

If so, I will run it through my Data Train software and give you a list
from the Year 1.

Also, it is my understanding that Railroad Model Craftsman will begin a
series on track and switches. (<-Heard that on here. Does that mean it's
true?)

Reply by e-mail if you can get your hands on US mrr mags so I'll remember
to do the Data Train search.

The article is in the hands of RMC's editor. May be published around the
first of the year. When (if?) it gets published it will take a step by
step approach to laying track and turnouts using a start-to-finish
series of photos with detailed captions.

Mainline modeler had several great articles about two years ago... MR
did a short brag on the general topic, but didn't go into details. It
would be cool if MR did a "White Paper" on Handlaying but they
haven't... Bill

Mostly because baby boomers don't handlay.
While I'd agree that there is a good amount of high-quality prefab track
available these days, I'd argue that the satisfaction gained by handlaying
is hard to match. Even using Central Valley's CVT (injection molded
high-detail tie strips, *VERY* cool IMHO) comes close enough to handlaying
to acheive the look & satisfaction as individual hand-glued ties.

There are some of us who do. It's just hard to get
old dudes to show us how it's done! :-) :-)

More importantly, the high quality track (like MicroEngineering in N)
makes dealing with getting supplies from the hapless handlaying
supply companies (you need 4 different companies to handlay track,
and none of them have a telephone number for orders!) is not
necessary any more. Fine, they loose.

The difference between a novice model railroader and an "expert"
is the number of parts he has had time to collect over the years!

I challenge you to scratch build a structure from "scratch". You
may not use anything you or your friends already have, which includes
catalogs. You may order parts, but you must find the reference in
the trade magazines (like MRR). You must order catalogs before
placing an order if the part you need is not specifically mentioned
in the magazine article. Make a decent effort to pretend you don't
know exactly what to get, but you may use a modicum of common
(i.e. beginner) sense. Report to the net how many months (or
years) it takes!

If I get one more NMRA magazine that bemoans the lack of
scratchbuilding, I'm going to bust some heads over there!

Back in the 60's and 70's MR had many articles on hand laying track - even
N scale code 40. In this fast world where everything must be done quickly
so throw the track down fast and get running.
