I know this was asked recently regarding getting to them via public transit,
but I drive so no problem. I live in Oshawa and want to know about good MRR
shops in the T.O. area, preferably on the east side. In particular someone
who deals in Lenz DCC systems. I had been planning on buying it from Hockley
Valley but after meeting the guy at the Toronto MRR Show I am not so sure,
he was very stand-offish (sp?) and didn't seem to want to talk about
anything, his booth, such as it was, was NOT crowded by any stretch of the
imagination. (I'm in retail as well and I know when someone is basically
saying bugger off!!)
I know about Georges Trains but not too many others. All I want is a shop
that has reasonably good stock, competitive prices if possible and an actual
interest in doing business with me. (Sorry for the partial rant but man is
it hard to find a good shop with someone who is interested in the hobby!!
and doesn't want to just take your money.) There is a shop near by but he is
more interested in selling me what he has, not what I want, he pretty much
talked me out of DCC, until I realized he just talked me out of buying DCC
from him!
I know there are many online stores but I like to go touch, see, browse etc.

Any help greatly appreciated....

Edward

Hi Edward:

I would agree with you on the people skills lacking on the behave of the
individual from Hockely, but I still bought my system from them and a couple
of decoders via mail order. Why? The price. 365 Can. for Lenz 02 starter
system. I really like the Lenz system and ignored his people skills or lack
there of. I use to work in the retail and wholesale business mysself and
now in ministry. People skills are important! If you are looking for
shops in the area try Huctch's Trains in Burlington. Have you tried Lark
Spur in Merrickville? They are more pricy.
Cheers,
Ewen

Thanks Ewen. I stumbled onto a site in Quebec while looking for
alternatives, it has a frequent buyer program, they keep track of what you
buy and give you back 10% once yu reach a thousand, so if you had bought, to
use their example, 1300$ worth of items, you could get a new loco worth the
$130 free!! Sounds good to me. They are at...
http://www.townshiptoytrains.com/ and they are a Lenz dealer!

Try Hemlock Junction in Milton. Well worth the commute from anywhere on
Ontario. I'm in Kitchener and the 45 min drive there is well worth it.
They have a large stock of all MR supplies and very competitive prices. You
will not frind two better people behind a counter eithor. This husband and
wife team know the hobby better than anyone I know. John knows the Digitrax
system inside and out and is very helpful. I have been to all the shops in
Ontario and no one can hold a candle to these guys.

I second the Tim Warris comments about Hemlock Junction in Milton.

Living 120 miles from Milton almost all of my purchases from Hemlock
are mail order, Sandi or John can be counted on to send these orders
well packaged and in reasonable time. Back orders (rare) are looked
after well.

John answers my Digitrax questions simply and clearly. He has lots of
decoder install experience.

I manage to visit the very well stocked store three or four times a
year .. it's like a visit to Mecca <G>

An off topic note and probably stating the obvious, if you find a
hobby store that "fits" don't you think it's better to spend as much
of your hobby dollar at that store as possible? That way by golly they
may still be in business next year.

Is Hemlock Junction on the Internet? I tried www.hemlockjunction.com,
but that didn't work.

I don't believe so, but I could be wrong.
