I see on page 24 that "in Nov. Stout Auctions presided over the
liquidation of the collection of the noted train dealer Doug Dubay and
the Valley Junction Train Museum. What happened? Any info.
appreciated.

John, Look at p.33 of the same magazine and you will see Doug Dubay's
layout, created by Clarke Dunham, for sale in the All About Toy Trains
ad. Their website has photos, description, and pricing.

What happened? No one is sure what's going on, but it has been discussed
on the Lionel message board on AOL.

I live near Des Moines. I can kinda restate what the Des Moines
Register newspaper reported. Doug paid too much for the design of the
layout. He also did not get the projected amount of traffic into the
museum. Therefore he had to declare bankruptcy for the museum.
I attribute part of that to Doug. You have to advertise if you want
to generate traffic. You cannot expect the local population to support
such an endeavor over an extended period of time. He was also in
competition with an extremely large and well known museum less than 20
miles away in Colfax, Iowa. It is run by "Red" Atwood. Red even had
billboards on the Interstate advertising his museum. I'm sure these
billboards brough in "causal" visitors.
I seriously doubt that any model railroad museum supports itself
strictly on admissin fees. Red has the funds to keep his going
regarless of paying traffic.

Doug's health became such that he could not maintain the business.
Unfortunately it also resulted in the auction of a great collection.
