In developing a new layout (5'x11' twice around, 3'x12' yard, spurs,
sidings, mountains, bridges; all the stuff one would include) I decided to
make a deep water shipping port part of the plan.
So, I did. I got out the 1x4's, plywood, screw gun, road bed, track, etc.
and....ta-da, one fine deep water port.
Trouble is, I sort of put the cart before the horse - so to speak.
I can't find any freighters, container ships, merchantmen, anything in HO
scale or even near HO. A tug boat, I found a tug boat in the Walthers
catalog.
I would settle for a comercial fishing fleet at this point and build a
cannery - but no comercial fishing boats either.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for the help.

Lindberg makes a line of 1:90 ships, and I've seen a few others.
I think a freighter or container ship would be pretty big in
HO, like a few feet long... that would explain the lack of
plastic kits. Merchantmen can be made by carving an HO scale
pipe and inserting it in the face of an Atlas plastic figure.
The key here is to scrounge around in hobby shops, plazas,
and so on, looking not for HO or 1:87.1 in particular, but
for stuff that's close. I bought the Lindberg tugboat at
a train store.
Just be patient and do a little detective work. BTW, there
is a club here in Toronto that has a beautiful freighter
(scratchbuilt of course) in O scale. Has to be seen to
be believed.

You might want to ask the question over on rec.models.scale.
There are a lot of people who do ships over there, they might be able
to help.
I have a 1/87 or 1/90 model of a North Sea fishing trawler, my
brother has a model of a tuna boat in the same scale.....I just
can't remember the model company.

You might start with a deck cargo barge (maybe even with containers or
vehicles) or a sand/gravel barge. The next step might be a grain barge,
or a compressed gas barge.
Tank barges are more complicated to model, since you need tank tops,
valves, piping, a pump house, containment, manifolds, etc.
Maybe you only *think* you built a deep water port -- maybe you actually
built a port facility up the inlet a bit...Perhaps where river traffic
comes down.
Check some magazines that deal with inland waterways and you might see
some aerial pix of barges to help you layout your mode.
Good luck!!

I have had my eye out for one myself for some time, but have yet to see
one. Plenty of tug boats out there, but no tankers to give a harbor
scene a true to life look. They have one for N scale, cost was $129.00,
must be loaded with gold for that price. The other alternatives I have
seen, backdrops with a tanker painted on it.
When I get to the point of actually adding one and have the time I
might consider getting the exact dimensions of a freighter from a book.
Once I have that I have a program that will take the prototype scale

There is a company called (I think) JL Innovations, and they make HO boats
and ships. I think they just started, at least I've only seen them recently.
I have seen 1. a lobster boat, 2. a pleasure launch, 3. a small commercial
fishing boat, 4. an ore ship or freighter (I forget which - it was way
too big for my layout)...They're made of polyester resin. A good MR shop
should be able to get them. Also, Model Shipways makes an HO Tug and an
HO schooner. They are a division of Model Expo which advertises in Model
Railroader all the time - they are the Rivarossi importers. Either one
of the model shipways boats are $39.99, I think. Some hobby shops also
carry them.
Of course, you can always kitbash from plastic kits, starting with a model
that's somewhat close to HO scale, and installing Grandt line doors, since
doors and such are genrally the items that set the "human scale size".

As for fishing boats and tankers ?????

A fishing fleet should be possible. Lindberg makes an Atlantic Trawler that
is very close to (if not exactly)1:87. They also make a gulf shrimpboat, a
tuna boat, and a tugboat in scales very close to HO. In addition there are
a number of sail boats, schooners, and even a tall ship at close to HO
scale. I'm told that ships come in all dimensions, so that ships between
1:75 and 1:96 can all work, except that doors and windows might need to be
adjusted for models at the extremes.
My own planned layout includes a harbor with a fish processing plant, so
I'm getting one of the trawlers.

Somewhere in Massachusetts.
For several years now there is a company at Nuremberg Toy Fair
which shows HO-ships (without control or with RC), I think the
company is called WEGASS or something like that.
They even make floodgates (fully functional, with opening
doors, punping of water etc.). They have been on the booth
of a bigger company called NOCH, which specialises in layout
accessories (trees, construction material, etc.). I don't
know which company distributes this in the States, mail me
if you want to get addresses of these companies in Germany
(I have them at home).

I believe that Faller is carried through the Walthers catalog.
Another company that is advertising a freighter model is JD Innovations, of
Aurora CO. They have an ad in the March/April 95 Narrow Gauge and Shortline
Gazette (p.8) for a 68' coastal freighter for $65.
Their mailing address is PO Box 110448, Aurora, CO 80042. Their phone # is
(303) 343-0630.
