I am currently putting together a model that has a lot of brick facing on
it. I want to paint the brick to look as realistic and rustic as possible.
I started with a flat base color of a dark red and then was going to add a
thinned out black wash to bring out the detail.
How should I get the random look of different colored bricks? Do I have to
paint each brick with a variance of colors? Should I use a white/grey wash
instead of a black wash to simulate the mortar between the bricks, or do I
do that with dry brushing?
Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Basically, you prime the buildings in Flat Black primer (we use
the cheapest stuff we can find at any store). After this dries,
we use a large brush and slop on flat white in a random manner.
What this does is provide a lighter background for the final
color. Using your choice of brick color, you then drybrush that
color over the entire brick portion of the building. You should
get 1) dark brick color on where the black was, 2) light brick
color where the white was 3) black in the gaps where you would
find the mortar 4) white in the gaps where the white got into the
mortar gaps, and 5) black/white spots on the bricks themselves
where the brick color didn't cover during the drybrush phase.
After this, you can use another shade of brick (straight from
bottle, or a custom mix) to pick selected bricks to highlight,
this will give you your variations in color.
For things like windows, etc., just paint the frames, etc.
completely white first, then the regular color. This will give a
fresh-painted look.
We generally use acrylic paints from a crafts store; Ceramcoat,
American Standard, Folkart, etc. Less than a buck per 1oz
bottle, on sale. They have plenty of colors as well, and it
cleans and dries fast. We use it on miniatures as well, and it
takes dullcote well.
This method of painting is pretty simple, and it doesn't take
much to get a decent looking building. If it doesn't look good,
you can always add more of whatever color you are using to
brighten it up. Be advised, though, that initially, the model
won't look very good (when there's only one or two colors on),
but once you are done, it'll look great! It's the whole thing
you're looking for.
If you want a pic, e-mail me, and I'll see if I can dig one up
(or take a new one).

The random colors can happen just from the number of coats of paint in
an area (I brush paint my buildings). As for making motar lines in the
brick thin washes of grey paint work well. Another idea to experiment
with is to take a little wall spackle that has been mixed with water to
get it into a creamy state. I then brush water into the motar lines
then with a second brush I add the creamy spackle brushing it into the
motar lines and wiping excess off with an old tee shirt... Be sure to
pactice this before trying it took me a couple hours and the backsides
of a few buildings to get the results I wanted.

Gee, I've got a can of glazier's putty I bought for a repair a while back
and was wondering what to do with the rest of it before it dried out. Great
idea, Thanks
