Wanted: Portable MP3 player that, once initially set up:

* Can connect to Mac as USB device.

* One can drag and drop audio files into it in at least one standard
audio format (doesn't have to be MP3) straight from the Finder.

* One can navigate to and listen to these files "on the road".

Nice but not essential additions would be:

* Ability to load in and pull off other Mac files as well.

* Either standard AA/AAA batteries or battery recharge via USB.

But other than that:

* NO playlists, albums, shuffles, cover art, any of that.

* No need to edit metadata, assign scores, sync, etc.

* No photos, video, cover art, etc.

* Preferably no need to learn to use any complex, ever-
changing, device-management app on the Mac itself.

No DRM-protected files will be involved in any of this; device size not
a crucial concern (though small is nice); hyper-good sound quality not a
major concern -- just adequate is OK.

Any product or brand recommendations for this limited set of objectives?

You make it sound like itunes requires any of these.
I have playlists -- but I don't *have* to do it.
I don't have to load video stuff either.
I rarely edit any info -- & certainly don't *have* to, but I do "sync" (not
automatically, only when I want to) when I have changes -- which you
apparently plan/want to do manually using the drag/drop method?

You've described a generic MP3 player. I gather some have some odd scheme
so they don't appear as USB memory when connected up, but those are
the exception. They all run off either replaceable batteries or internal
that can't be replaced.

You just ignore the features you don't want, or get one that is old
enough that it doesn't have a full blown screen, so it will never show
videos or album art (but those that do don't require that you view
videos or album art).

They all use relatively simple arrangements for moving around, I doubt
there is a consistency so each player will require some
learning/adjustment.

Sound isn't really going to be a factor of the player, but the headphones
that connect to them.

You really haven't defined much.

You haven't said anything about storage space, that will impact. If you
need a lot, you have to go with one with a hard drive, and that will raise
the price. I decided I wanted one with a memory slot, so I wouldn't have
to dump the MP3 player if I ran out of memory.

Buy a brand name, and you'll spend more than a lesser brand, or a generic
player.

You can buy cheap MP3 players for $20 or so, that do fine if you can live
with about 2gigs of storage space and just enough screen to see titles
and such.

No, not at all. I was trying to make clear that my initial list of
wanted capabilities was _all_ I really wanted -- that any of the
additional capabilities listed just above, even if present, would be of
zero added value to me.

There is, actually, NO way to do what I want using an iPod, right?

Thanks -- I more or less understood this. But, specific band or model
recommendations for well-rated Mac-compatible units?

No, just get anything not made by Apple (or Sony). There is a website
called 'anything but ipod' or something.
