- Start iTunes
- Connect iPod
- iPod says "Synch in progress.." even though automatic synch
not specified in iTunes
- iTunes appears tb hung w/no indication of iPod having been
recognized or synch in progress
- After about 5 minutes, "Verifying [iPod Name]..." dialog
appears, but iTunes' window is still unresponsive to mouse
click/drag until about 60 seconds have passed.
- Eventually a "The iPod [iPod Name] cannot be synched. An
error occurred while writing to the device" dialog appears.
Tried re-booting the iPod, same deal.
Then I tried:
- Re-Boot PC
- Attach iPod.
- iPod is recognized by file manager and I can browse pics on it
- Start iTunes
- iTunes pops "Verifying...." and appears tb hung. Slide
window across iTunes' window, and the area does not get
re-drawn.
- Several minutes later, iTunes re-draws it's space and processes
any request that was previously issued to drag the window.
- Now iTunes is back in the same "Verifying"/hung state....
and iPod is saying "Sync in Progress"
????
Does this sound familiar to anybody? I don't think the easy
answer (bad iPod) is quite so obvious bc I recall this happening
with other iPods far in the past.

take the laptop and the ipod to an apple store and see what they say.
This has happened to me three or four times.
I've always managed to get it working again after lots of
semi-educated guesswork. But afterward, I am never 100%
sure exactly what it was that I did!

You seem to have forgotten to tell us what model iPod this is.

Gen 4, but I'm pretty sure I've been through this on a Gen 3.

Both of those use hard drives for storage. It's possible the hard drive
is experiencing failure. Have you examined the system log for I/O
errors?
Could be but I doubt it, since it has happened
more than once to my iPhone 3GS.
Then I have my terminology wrong.
The one it's happening on now is the latest model
(camera/microphone....).
The one I called "Gen 3" was the previous model.

I'm pretty sure everything up to the iPod classic (that's including the
1, 2, 3, 4, and 5th generation) has a hard disk inside for storage.
This Apple support page will show you how to identify your mode(s):
<http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1353>
EveryMac shows the storage details for each model:

he's talking about an ipod touch, none of which have hard drives.
Then he needs to stop calling it a "Gen 4".

why?
it's a gen 4 ipod touch. calling it a gen 4 is exactly correct.
But insufficient. A "Gen 4" iPod could be an iPod Classic, iPod Nano,
iPod Shuffle or iPod Touch.
If I only read this thread, I can't tell which model Pete has. The
mention of a camera narrows it down to a Nano or Touch.
Looking at other recent threads, it appears that Pete has an iPod Touch,
but it would have helped if he actually said that.

it could, but he's had trouble with his ipod touch before and in this
thread he mentioned photos, a camera and a microphone.

it would have made it clear, but it's not hard to tell.
Mea Culpa: It's a Touch.

Exactly my point. nospam has an apparent huge chip on his shoulder for
me. It's as if he feels the need to try to disprove every word I utter.
Pretty childish.

nonsense. you have a penchant for jumping to erroneous conclusions,
this being one of them, and now you're trying to project it on to me.
yes it would have been nice if he spelled it out, but anyone who was
reading what he wrote (especially given his numerous questions about an
ipod touch in other threads) could have figured it out.
The OP's description in this thread was not clear; and I'm not the only
one who realizes it. I didn't happen to be so lucky as to read other
threads where this person used other words to describe his iPod. So I
didn't have any other clues like you obviously did. That doesn't equate
to a penchant for erroneous conclusions. The chip on your shoulder is
plain to see. So you can fuck off, you humongous prick.

by itself, no. when including other posts of yours, yes.

oh, the irony.

because you saw other posts of his where he was more clear.

last word freak
+1.
I just plugged it in. Took awhile for iTunes to identify it,
but then it came up in iTunes and I was able to synch it
successfully.
In this case I cannot think of anything I've done - except reboot
the PC once or twice.... OTOH, I rebooted the PC a couple of
times trying to make the problem go away when it first occurred.
Oh well....
