I'm in the market for a good judogi. Problem is, I live in a small
town, can't buy one retail, so I'll need to mail-order it.

What is the difference between a "single weave" and a "double weave"
gi?

Is it just the weight of the fabric? (10, 12, 16 oz. etc.)

or; Do the double weaves have stronger seams?

Also, are the unbleached ones much stronger than the bleached ones?

Any help appreciated!

Double weave judo gis have twice the number of cotton twine woven into
the same size. they have better stiches and the unbleached ones are far
tougher the the bleached ones.. this is from extensive experience on the
tatamis . ( They used to advertise that the double weave gis were strong
enough to tow a truck with ) and they sure allow you to excecute
beautiful chokes.

Double weave is just that...it is a heck of a lot thicker and tougher than
single. Bleached or unbleached doesn't really make a heck of a lot of
difference in my experience as you will probably end up bleaching the
thing a bit if you roll around on less than sterile tatamis. The down
side is that the neck seams especially feel like you're wearing cardboard:
takes a lot of use to soften them up.
You should be careful of getting the right size as all the double weave
stuff shrinks A LOT after a hot wash. So try ordering big, unless you
want to hang dry everything for the rest of your life!
Happy buying...

I'll confirm that opinion. I have a Lion brand double weave gi jacket that
I practiced judo in when I was 16 to 17 years old. I wear it now to Tang
Soo class when my regular dobahk jacket is being trimmed or repaired. BTW,
I'm 47 now. There is a downside, though -- the dang thing can be _very_
hot to train in.
