A New Jersey man who owns a chain of karate schools in the Northeast
surrendered to Nassau police yesterday in an assault on an instructor
at a competing karate school that authorities say may be tied to a turf
battle in the Levittown-Plainview area.
Daniel Schulmann, 31, of Upper Saddle River, was charged with
third-degree assault and third-degree burglary in an April 29 break-in
at the office of the American Karate & Fitness Center in Levittown.
Police say Schulmann, who goes by the nickname "Master Tiger
Schulmann," assaulted Shimon Benmashiah, a karate instructor at the
Levittown school. His brother, Chagai Benmashiah, 26, is owner of the
karate school as well as one in West Babylon. Shimon Benmashiah was
treated at Mid-Island Hospital in Bethpage for a fractured nose,
sprained neck and cuts and bruises.
"We don't know the real motive, but it may have been intimidation,
apparently involving territory," said Eighth Squad Det. Tony Letterel.
"He did it to be a bully as an intimidation tactic," Shimon
Benmashiah, 27, of Freeport said in an interview at the Levittown
school. "I did not fight back because as a person involved in martial
arts for years, I do not believe in violence and I totally refrain from
it." Schulmann, of 9 Cornmill Court, Upper Saddle River, N.J., declined
to comment yesterday after he was released on his own recognizance. But
his lawyer, Kevin Keating of Mineola, said Benmashiah's allegations were
"absolute, complete nonsense. Anyone in the know in the martial arts
community knows Mr. Schulmann to be a man of restraint and integrity."
He said Schulmann was attacked by Benmashiah.
Letterel said the April 29 assault happened at about 8:45 p.m.
after
Schulmann and two other men walked into the American Karate & Fitness
Center, 3517 Hempstead Tpke., as a class with about 40 karate students,
including 20 children, was in progress.
Letterel said Schulmann forced his way into Benmashiah's office,
with Schulmann's friends guarding the door, "and lunged at the victim."
Benmashiah said, "He was like a maniac. He choked me and repeatedly
punched me in the face. He head-butted me and then he got me with a
right hook, and when he didn't knock me down he got frustrated and hit
me with a left hook. He tried to engage me in combat, but I refused."
Letterel said several students came to Benmashiah's defense, and
Schulmann and his friends left.
Asked why his client went to the Levittown karate school on April
29, Keating said, "We deny he was there for any improper reason.
Benmashiah, who is also a champion of martial arts, said he has
known Schulmann since 1982 when they trained together at a martial arts
school in Spring Valley, N.Y., where Schulmann later opened his first
school. He said the two never competed in martial arts, but later became
involved in a dispute over Schulmann's Oceanside school, which
Benmashiah said he invested in.
Benmashiah said Schulmann asked him to become a partner of the
Oceanside school. "Two years later, we had our differences over the way
he did martial arts, and I wanted out. He wouldn't give me my share and
I walked away with no money."
Keating called that accusation "too bizarre to even respond to."
Last year, Benmashiah said, he obtained a temporary order of
protection against Schulmann "after he sent three of his goons into this
business to intimidate me."
Schulmann is due back in Nassau County Court in Mineola Monday.

Not for nothing, but exactly *when* do you fight back? I'd say that
when you are getting your face beat in, it may be time to defend
yourself.
Knowing how the media can't get anything but the lottery numbers
right, I would refrain from making further comment.

ANother guy he hit in the shins with a baseball bat!!!!!!
His brother also punched a guy in the face for looking through the front
window of their NYC school.
Something to think about before you sign up for his black belt program.
'Nuff said?

These clowns picked a time that a class was in progress (evening I
believe?). There must have been a few other martial arts related
people of an adult age in the building at the time. I fact I think
that the article mentioned this as well.
If someone tried this at one of our classes it would be akin to asking
for a trip to the emergency dental clinic.
Would it be a little scary? Probably, but these guys (at least one of
them) were being physically aggressive not just a verbal annoyance.
Why tolerate behavior like this?

Two essential tools:
WD-40 to make things go.
Duct tape to make them stop.

Then, O Spouter of Pseudo-Zen-Babble, why the hell are you learning and

If there is NOTHING one will fight for, then why does one learn to
fight??

Hey Lee,
While its a terrible thing to read about a supposed MA who would
conduct themselves like this in this day and age, its also disturbing
to think that another skilled MA would sit there and take it.
To me its like buying a life vest and then leaving it on the ship as
it sinks...

I find it amazing that everyone is complaining about Benmashiah not having
fought back but no one is saying anything about the thug tactics of
Schulmann.
Personally I think Benmashiah should take his x-rays and pictures of what
happened to him and sue Schulmann for about say 100% of the total net
worth
of his chain of schools. This is not the back streets of Hong Kong .
This incident is right out of some bad Kung-Fu movie where the "bad"
school tries to destroy the "good" school to get their students. If this
had been some other business, say a newspaper and some thugs from another
paper came in to rough up the editor, no one would be talking about how
the editor should have bashed the other guy. You call the cops lock the
thugs away.

I see your point, but you've missed theirs. Who cares where or why,
if someone is looking to crush your skull, it is time to respond in
kind.

Schulmann is a loser. This guy has his students call him O'Sensie, what
balls. He is great at marketing, but so is Burger King. Many Karate
schools thrive when he comes to town since very few of his students stay
very long. Who wants to pay $2,500.00 to run around a room yelling "One -
Two - Three - Tiger Schulmann Karate".
I'm curious to know whether there are any ex/present Schulmann students
reading this News Group. If you're out there, what experiences do you
have?
