and which of the two is better if they matched each other.

I don't think there's ever a short answer to a question of which
of two styles is better. Better for what?

If this is true, then the answer as far as a match is concerned would
in theory be that the Shotokan fighter who could make the Shorei component
work would have the advantage, or the Shorin fighter who could take advantage
of weaknesses in the Shorei component in the Shotokan fighter. My dim
recollection is that the Shorin component consists of light, quick movements
with rapid stance changes, and the Shorei of the slower, heavier power
movements and stances. So it would be the 'dancer/slugger' vs. the 'dancer,'
and the victor in such a contest depends on whether the 'dancer'
can be drawn into a slugging contest, or whether they can out-maneuver
the dancer-slugger.
Sorry if this makes no sense, it's based on what little understanding I had
of these styles a number of years ago.
kind regards,

well, let's see.
shotokan has powerful punches to the face, throat, ribs and groin,
so has shorin-ryu. shotokan has spear hand strikes to
the eyes, so has shorin ryu; shotokan has elbow strikes to the spine, so has
shorin ryu; shotokan has knee attacks to the head and body, so has shorin-ryu;
shotokan has shuto strikes to the throat and neck, so has shorin ryu; shotokan
has front kicks to the groin, throat and face, so has shorn ryu; shotokan has
roundhouse kicks to the temple and kidney, so has shorin ryu; shotokan has
kicks to the knee and thigh, so has shorin ryu; shotokan has foot sweeps,
throws and joint locks, so has shorin ryu.
now, what was the question?

If you have a good teacher and you are working hard at it then you can be good
at any martial art style (Shorin-Ryu, Shotokan, Wado-Ryu, Take won do....).
Good luck in selecting the style.
Dave.
Hey, you're new around here, aren't you?
I hearby award you a white belt in net jutsu.
Watch the seniors, pay good attention, and in about three
months, you will qualify for your lemon belt test.

They really reflect the character of the societies which
generated them. Shotokan is much bolder, and physically manifests
lots of spirit. Shorin-Ryu is more conservative and practically
oriented. Shotokan is low and powerful, Shorin-Ryu is light and fast.
Those are pretty generic characterizations. Hopefully not too
flameworthy.
