Wrong. He said he competed, but when grilled to produce names, dates and
orginization he had no comment.
He claims a blackbelt in Shotokan, but the only formal training I know of for a
fact is in ballet.

Yes, Van Dam is a world champion in taiji push hands, tae kwon doe
tournament style, sumo wrestling and kung fu... Err, that is according
to hollywood of course, and their ability to propogate an average
skilled "movie trained" actor to give off the impression that because
he is muscle ripped and do some kickboxing movies, he is officially a
world champion.

In actuality 90% of the martial arts we have seen Van Dam execute are
simply choreographed movie manuevers without any pre-knowledge of the
style he is using. In fact, if you were to meet him in person and name
a movie of his with his "kungfu action" and ask him what style he was
using, he would likely fold.

I'll pay 50 cents for his autograph though!!!

He fought Frank Lobman a couple of times - without success.
Beyond that, I don't know.

Anyway, ballet's a good start.

Perhaps he didn't have many trophies; could make anyone a touch reticent.

Actually, he knew very little until he came to the united states (he did do
some limited stuff in Europe), but not really worth talking about now.

When he came to the US he was sleeping in a car and was working washing
dishes, when he tried out for the part in Bloodsport. He went in, and did
his famous splits using two chairs, and the producer called Frank Dux and
asked him what he thought. Frank Dux said he could teach him all he needed
to know to make the film so they hired him.

Jean Claude went to Franks Dojo and I remember Frank asking him to "Dive
over" a folding chair which had been placed in the middle of the room. Jean
Claude dove, crashed into the chair, and both fell to the floor.

Frank had one of the instructors then not only dive over the chair, but fold
it up as he went over, and then they stood up, faced Jean Claude and opended
the chair and told him to have a seat, that this was going to take some
time.

Frank taught Jean Claude for several months before the movie started
filming, and it (as you all know) did pretty good. Frank then trained all
the martial artists for Jean Claude's movie Legionnaire (and also plays a
cameo role).

If you watch almost all of Jean Claude's movies, you will see that he gives
"Thanks" or "Credit" to Frank Dux in the movie credits.

Now you all know the truth...

Lobman would murder a queer actor like VD in about 3 seconds.

He said they weren't his hardest fights :-). But he does seem to have some
respect for vd as an opponent. Which is why I don't believe he's quite as
poncy as you say. Crap actor though.

I remember seeing a documentary on martial artists turned film stars
called "Top Fighter". It featured Van Damme, however they only
interviewed his karate instructor. They showed pictures of him when
he was young in his Karate outfit. His instructor (who was some
fat dude wearing a wife beater singlet) said JCVD was a good karate
champion but there were many people better than him. I think he was
the Belguim champion, but that was about it. Who cares anyway, the
guy loves himself.

Lobman is a real fighter.
VD is not.
They did not fight.
VD is a complete fraud.
He has not competed in anything.

Under the name Jean Claude Van Varenburg, he fought two amateur

Jeesus. I hate that movie. You have no idea how many times
people have said to me, "I thought you'd be bigger," then laugh about
it. Or when people find out I have a university degree in Philosophy
and they say, "Just like in that movie Roadhouse right?"
If I ever meet Patrick Swayze I am gonna bust him right in the

Then I might take him to the ground and fuck him. Hee hee

Look, Lobman is a heavyweight MT fighter of international level.
In WHAT did they fight?
Where? When?
Why isnt the little homo VD dead if they fought?
He is an actor, a tiny homosexual acter , the idea of him fighting a Lobman is
the height of absurdity.

Lobman told me more about his Thai rules fight with Shamrock than anything
else. Van Damme was only mentioned in passing; Frank said they fought
twice. As most of Lobman's career is at European level (though he had at
least one world title - at cruiserweight ) I jumped blindly to the
conclusion that they met in European sanctioned Muay Thai. If I see him
again, I'll try and get more info.

Unfortunately not. Back when Don Wilson was trying to get his
'straight to video' movie career started, he was offering challenges
to Van Damme to back up his claims to world championship. Wilson said
he could find no record to back JCVD's claim. VD's manager mentioned
the Van Varenburg stuff, saying 'see? see? He is a world champion.'

Probably Black Belt mag has it in their online archives somewhere.

They did fight, twice. I dont know about both altercations, but I know
one occured at a club. VD slipped as he tried to throw a punch or
something embarrising like that. I think they even had a re-enactment
on the howard stern show when Frank was a guest, hehe.

Wow!
So many mythology out there!
JCVD never made any fals claims concerning his martial artist bio.
For a few facts:
http://www.jcvandamme.net/EN/ENBio/ENFights/enfights.html

Extract:
At seventeen years, Jean-Claude has developed physically and has more
self- esteem. Sensible to classical music, he takes dancing lessons
during four years, but karate remains his main priority. He succeeds
in controlling his fear and takes part in many demanding fights. His
opponents fear his speed and the strength of his legs.

After having won the European in teams in 1979, Jean-Claude takes
part in the World Championship in Wako, Florida. Amazed by the USA,
that he discovers for the first time, our young karateka skips
training. He gets defeated by the Belgian Teugels who becomes
Vice-Champion of the World.

A few months later, Jean-Claude takes his revenge and beats Teugels
in less then two minutes. A strenuous training, and a rage to win :
the young Van Varenberg will remember the lesson.
