Folks,
Appreciate any help you can give on this matter. Recently I've been
getting some delivery notifications when I try sending some pictures
to a friend of mine. The pics are in .jpg format. We keep getting
errors like the following:

Reason: LMTP transmission failure has occurred
Diagnostic code: lmtp;550 5.2.2 Delivery failed: Over quota

When I saw the 'Over quota' I thought the Inbox might be too full.
We emptied the Inbox of the recipient and tried resending the
pictures, same result. Does anyone know what the problem might be
here?

Thank you for your help,

Mike

right off the top, how many are you sending at once? Most standard
e-mail systems have an 8 or 10 meg restriction on incoming, so clearing
the box wouldn't do much if you're sending 12 megs in one message.

Just a thought.

I thought of that too. I sent one picture, it was about 700kB. Still
got the error message.

Get a quote from your ISP on how big a message is allowed to be. On
gmail I can send and receive over 5 megs in one email; but I've been
on ISPs with a 50k limit before.

Depends on the mail client, the mail server software and how the ISP
counts quota. First thing to look for is whether the deleted files are
still taking up space in a recycle bin, or if a 'purge' or 'compact'
operation is required to free up the disk space even after deletion.

What's your friend using to read the mail?

Well the weird thing is is that the email never even made it to the
ISP mail server. So there's definitey something blocking it on their
end. Supposed to hear back from tech support in the next day or two.
We'll see...

In article <1ef27a25-e62f-4381-8582-

It's not an oversized message warning, it's an over quota warning
meaning your mailbox is over the allowed. Go into your Sent Items area
and delete stuff from there. Also, if your service has a deleted items
folder make sure you have emptied it.

If that doesn't do the trick, post the full, exact message.

Yup, as you originally sent the mail server thinks the account is over
quota.

But here's an example of what I was getting at. I use Thunderbird to
read mail and news. For one of my accounts, mail is counted against
quota whether it's in my inbox, filed to a different IMAP folder, or in
the trash. So just deleting the message doesn't help. I have to empty
the trash as well. Even worse, the mail server doesn't release the disk
space used for the message until I select file > compact folders.

This is not usually the case. But I would have your friend go through
the cognate steps in his own mail client just in case.
