KARATE ATHLETE SCOTT BATEY LEADS FLORIDA BLACK BELTS IN REPRESENTING
STATE OF FLORIDA
Scott Batey, an outstanding karate athlete, along with a team of his
hand picked Black Belts from New Tampa’s Rising Sun Black Belt Academy
have again been selected to represent the State of Florida as members of
TEAM USA. Batey and his TEAM USA consisting of his son Robert Batey,
Michael Smith, Daniel Graziano, Tracy O’Neal, and BC Collins will
compete in Dublin Ireland, London England, and Paris France.
Master John Townsley, Chairman of the Selection Committee and Head Coach
of TEAM USA established by the USA Karate Federation (USAKF), reported
that in selecting Scott Batey as a TEAM USA member, that his personal
skill level, producing national and international champion competitors,
along with his leadership abilities were significant factors in his
selection. Couple this with his teams' victories at the 1995
Mediterranean Games in Greece where; Batey and 5 of his Black Belts
scored an unprecedented 13 medals for TEAM USA and you can see he has a
winning formula. “This visionary martial arts leader is not only a
credit to his community but, to this entire nation.”
The USA Karate Federation has a distinguished record of accomplishment
in international events. The USAKF is United State’s only karate
organization that is a member of the World Karate Association,
Federation Mondaile de Karate, which is recognized by the International
Olympic Committee.
Master Townsley directed TEAM USA at the Goodwill Games in St.
Petersburg, Russia during the summer of ‘94 before 85,000 Russians at
Kirov Stadium. Performing and marching at the Closing Ceremonies before
such a vast crowd with President Boris Yellsin and Mr. Ted Turner in
attendance, was great, but bringing home the Gold Medal was the
highlight. An estimate 10 million people witnessed the karate athletes
on TV, the largest viewing audience ever in the history of karate.
It is envisioned that through Scott Batey’s example and his TEAM USA
athletes’ involvement in the competition, not only will the sport of
Karate be advanced, but a meaningful contribution will be make to
inspire others to a healthy life-style and exercise on a regular basis.
Our message to our youth is, “Say no to drugs, respect, and stop the
violence.” These messages have been heard around the country through
TEAM USA’s involvement and Chuck Norris’ Kick Drugs Out of America.

Yes, The USAKF Team and TEAM USA Karate (United States Karate Team) are
not one in the same. TEAM USA Karate was established by the USAKF and
an act of Congress.
Dr.Boggs was the previous Chairman of the Selection Committe and
Director of Team USA established by the USA Karate Federation (USKAF)
which is now directed by Master Townsley.
> Ahhhh ... the truth shall set you free.
Yes, it does.
> Mr. Townsley, I don't know personally and some people speak highly of him, but let us not misrepresent the facts here guys.
Yes, let's not, ..I just spoke with Master Townsley last week and he
came here to vistit Mr.Batey, myself, and other Team Members in August
(this year). We have to keep in close contact with him, especially with
our departure being October 29.

>A transparent attempt to link with what Mr. Norris has accomplished in >Houston and surrounding areas. This type of implication can be >considered litigious in many circles. What Mr. Norris has accomplished
That is quite alright! Dr.Boggs' USA Campaign Against Drugs & Violent
and Master Townsleys' association to this and TEAM USA Karate are not
questionable and if this implication is a problem to Mr.Norris,
Mr.Norris would have sued the USAFK in 1995 when this statement was
first made.

yes it is, jiin, this is the most important part of my message. I'm
sure there are alot of questions and some of our notes may not compare
across the board but, that's okay. We still both love karate and have
devoted our lives to it.
This kind of >begging however turns my stomach. Local merchants are

TEAM USA Karate needs money badly. We are not funded the way the Tae
Kwon Do is. We need money if Karate is going where it should be. If
you or anyone have any questions or concerns feel free to email or call
us at: 1(800)977-5811.
Thank you for your input, jiin!

I have wondered about this quote since I first saw it. When did Ed
Parker say this? Was it during a casual conversation with his wife, to a
work mate, friend etc. Did he use it as an icebreaker at parties? If
some one was introduced to him at a party, would he use it? "Hello my
names Ed, I come to you with only Karate, empty hands, I have no
weapons, etc." Did people avoid him at dinner parties, "Uh oh, look out,
it's Ed with the principles and honor, life and death, stuff again".
Enquiring minds want to know.
>This brings up another very interesting point! Doesn't the Parker system
>use some sticks in one of their katas? Let's ask RONIN. I have seen the
>Parker quote on his posts.
Actually I would imagine if you wanted to ask anyone about it
I would go to someone who is much father along in the system than me.
As far as I know they do use weapons such as the sticks. I
would imagine that the point is that although weapons are used you
don't greet people with them. I kinda enjoy you asking me these
questions because I am working on my black belt thesis already so that
I have plenty of info when I need it finished and these questions
really make me think about the creed.
This is the second post flaming me from you. What is it about
me that makes you so upset and feeling the need to attack me?
>> > I don't think that any of us have to worry about getting killed by

Good point since I really don't want to kill anyone...except
maybe my that guy who...well...nevermind...
I personally believe Ed Parker didn't want to kill anyone
either unless he had to so I feel proud to follow his example and
others like him.
Just so you don't think I'm being a system elitist I think
many Tracy practicioners I've met are good examples of martial artists
too.

I don't understand why I never got this post on my newsreader.
I hpe that anyone who asks me a question would e-mail it to me since I
seem to miss quite a few posts. Remember to remove the "DELETE" when
e-mailing.
I don't know when or where he said it. I really wish I did and
anyone who knows I would hope they would tell us. Next month I'm going
to a Richard "Huk" Planas seminar and I'm going to try and ask him. I
think he might know.
I can imagine that if he did say this all all dinner affairs
he might have gotten pretty repetitive after a while but I don't think
ideas such as honour and principles and life and death are boring.
Much the opposite. They make really interesting conversation. The
problem is that while many people "talk the talk" they don't "Walk the
walk".
This brings up an interesting question. When I am out with my
friends I make a point of not going overboard about Kenpo because
after a while it drives them nutz. Does anyone else have this problem?

Heh, I've been training for the better part of my life and I've found one
or two things about talk'n about your MA
1) Your're friends , unless they train, probably don't give a
rats ass about it.. it's interesting to them for the first few days, then
they'll make comments about you kicking everybody at the *insert place here*
ass's and make quips about the MA in general.. but they don't wanna hear
about it.. I just don't talk about it unless asked, then WATCH OUT ;)
2) If you are honest about not wanting to get into fights unless
in a truley needy situation, try not to talk too much about it. Live it,
be it, don't talk about it. :)
