The 1998 Senior National Judo Championships were held at the Odeum in Villa
Park, Illinois, May 1 and 2, 1998. There were 638 contestants from 45 states.
There were several notable winners in the event. Leo White of Georgia came out
of retirement to win his 17th Senior National Judo Championships by beating 2
time Olympian Rene Cappo of Florida in the final of the men's 100+ kg weight
class. White has won more senior national titles in the history of the United
States.
The women's 63 kg weight division saw a much anticipated gold medal match
between Olympian and two time world medalist Liliko Ogasawara and Olympian
Celita Schutz. Schutz, who is from Hillsdale, NJ, is coached by Ogasawara's
father. Liliko is a resident athlete at the Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs. After a fierce fight dominated by Schutz, Schutz defeated
Ogasawara with a pin to become the United States Judo Champion.
A final upset occured in the men's 60 kg category when the OTC's Brandon
Greczkowski upset Olympian and defending champion Clifton Sunada, also of the
OTC, by a split decision.
This marks the first U.S. Senior National Championships since the International
Judo Federation changed the weight classes, which became effective January 1,
1998. The 1999 Senior Nationals will be held in Spokane Washington.
