not to get off topic, but i had always thought that the term "gook"
originated during the Vietnam war, and that american soldiers used it to refer
to the jungle based Viet Cong.
Anyone who knows better, enlighten me.

Here's the history behind the word:
"Gook" is a pan-racial epithet first used in the Philipine-American war
(1899-1902) to refer to Filipino natives who had no mixture of European
"blood" -- a particularly despised category in the worldview of
European and American imperialists. Historically, this term had also
been used to refer to other "people of color" whose land were invaded
and occupied by Euro and/or American imperialists such as the Haitians,
Nicaraguans, Costa Ricans, etc. BUt since the Korean War, it was used
mainly by American soldiers to denigrate Asian people.
And now a word about "Elmo":
"ELMO" (EuroTrash Low-IQ Moron Outcast) is a slang used in some UserNet
circles to refer to a teenage kid usually of European racial background
with gender-identity problems who lacks the intellectual capacity to
count up to ten without looking at his fingers but has enough free time
and access to an On-Line Service to generate garbage and junk up any
UserGroup he happened to come across.
