I ask this here because I think some of the regulars here might be able to
point me in the right direction.

I remember some years ago there was a story (may have been more than one,
but one sticks in my mind) of an attractive woman, a model maybe, who was
brutally attacked and her face slashed up and badly scarred.

Sadly, human predators being what they are, I doubt that this is a singular
incident. And so I'm looking for information, case
histories/biographies/autobiographies, of people who have been in that kind
of situation. I'm not so interested in the attacks themselves, but the
aftermath. What I want to see is how people react to it, what things people
around them do "right" to support and help the healing (emotional as well as
physical) and what they do wrong (even without meaning to).

I've done some searches but either I haven't found the right sheaf of
keywords or results are lost in a sea of false positives.

This is a martial arts forum. We do that to other people, it does not
happen to us.

Seems like a fairly common occurrence.

Well, I can't really give you any, other than to say that I've read
that such behavior is common in Jamaica et al, using battery acid.
Especially when it comes to rival pimps and who has the most
attractive prostitutes. But that might be a urban legend worthy for
snopes.com

Tried searching for +facial +scarring +psychological? That might lead
to something useful. Or perhaps asking on a psych group? (is there a
sci.psychology group? Maybe sci.med ?)

There was a case in Ontario a few years back where a former boyfriend (I
think) threw acid in a woman's face. Of course there was also a history of
threats, a restraining order et cetera.

Try the following Google search:

I spit tobacco juice all over the place where it hit.
It contains neutralising chemicals.

In general, baking soda usually works pretty well. It would be best to know
what acid you are dealing with first, though. Some acids are better
neutralized with a different base. TKD is not usually considered a good
base.

If you don't have your handy box of baking soda, take Mr. Miyagi's advice -
don't be where the acid is thrown.

Are you thinking of the actress Theresa Saldana? I believe her face
was slashed
by an obsessed fan but I don't think it left her badly scarred. I
could be wrong, though.
