I just started browsing this newsgroup and am wondering is there a law
against automatics? Here in Georgia they are for sale all over. I was
looking at a few display cases of different automatics this past weekend
at a local gunshow. They are also for sale at the local flea markets.

flea markets and gun/knife shows have them all the time. Thing is, besides
local state, county, etc police, there is nobody to enforce the law like the
firearm laws, so they just don't bother.

The switchblade law varies from state to state. Not sure what it is in GA.

There is no specific wording regarding automatic knives in Georgia state
law. The city of Atlanta does have a little known law on the books that
makes the possession of a "locking" folder with a blade greater that 3" a
misdemeanor.

Georgia does have a state law forbidding the unlicensed concealed carry of a
"weapon". A Georgia Firearms License (aka concealed carry permit) only
applies to firearms and does not provide any special consideration regarding
knives. Law enforcement officers have the latitude to determine if your
knife, stick, whatever, qualifies as a weapon and is cause for arrest, then
the courts make the final decision. In many cases, it will come down to
what you were doing with the object at the time.

The gunshow and flea market dealers (or their distributors) are breaking a
Federal law prohibiting the transport of automatic knives across state lines
for commerce to non-government personnel or dealers who cater specifically
to them. This law is currently seldom enforced for domestic knives, perhaps
due to manpower and budget constraints. Most folks would agree that there
are bigger fish to fry than the guy who wants to own a neat pocket knife.

The above is not legal advice, just the result of my personal research and
observations.

Yes, it is illegal to carry an automatic in georgia unless you are disabled.
You deffinately don't want to be caught carrying one. I know i wouldn't be
caght dead carrying one - it's a good way to get a person's weapons permit
revoked!

Our knife department doesn't sell automatics though we do have some gravity
knives for police/military personel and the near gravity knife the CRKT M-16
and of course the torsion bar Kershaws. I'm not sure but I don't think it's
actually legal to sell factory autos here in Georgia. Gun show and flea
markets get away with it buy selling after market autos. These will
generally not be as tight and will not function as well as factory autos.

Since you are in Georgia, if you are in the gainesville area, some by and
see us at V.L. Adamson Hardware Lula, Georgia - we boast one of the largest
selections of knives in NE Georgia. Visit our website for more info and
directions www.alltel.net/~vadamson or just come to see us!

You will find automatics at most gun shows, knife shows and
flea markets. If you are caught carrying or using one, you
will probably need a lawyer, so consider them for private
collection and display only. A former boss got several and
almost walked on a plane with one in his pocket, so don't
make a habit of private carry - you could land in a situation
where an automatic is a distinct liability.

Automatics tend to fall into two classes here - the really
cheap Chinese imitations of better knives, that go for about
$15 up to $50, and the better quality production autos for
about $80 (Boker) up to $300 (various Benchmade and Microtech).
If you just want something with a button, get the cheapie,
but don't expect it to last, and watch it when you put
your hand in your pocket. The better knives will give you more
satisfaction in ownership, but again, taking one on the
street is asking for trouble.

They're a hot ticket item now, because they've only recently
come available, and several marketers are trying to hit the
lower end of the market (Delta, for one), so expect falling
prices for awhile.
