Hi All,

I have a question regarding powder-coated blades - is there any kind of
special treatment they need w.r.t. sharpening etc.? I mean, I'm
guessing that the powder-coating stops short of the cutting edge?

The reason I ask is that I'm looking at the SOG Knives Seal Pup
(http://www.sogknives.com/sealpup.htm) after having it recommended to
me by a serving Marine Corpsman. I like the look of the knife, but am
uncertain about the whole powder-coating thing.

Yours,
Duncan Bayne

The blade is AUS6, which is usually chosen for it's stain resistance (and
low cost). The powder coating is mostly unnecessary for this steel anyway,
so I wouldn't worry about it unless you are using it in an especially harsh
environment.

I too like the Seal Pup, but for the price you can probably get some people
in here to suggest better deals on other knives. It depends on what you
want it for though. You can definitely get blades that will stay sharp
longer.

If you do get one, make sure you shop around. Amazon has it for $55 and
free shipping, although they don't ship it in a hurry:

Many dealers sell it for $65-70, which is definitely too much.
