I've just been to France. I didn't buy knives, but I couldn't but notice the huge amount of Laguioles that souvenir shops got on
show, and I didn't get a chance to see cutlery shops!. I knew about Opinels, (they had many of those too), and I know there are many
different sizes and blade composition and handle woods. But the variety of Laguioles is impressive. For starters, there are many
different blade markings, and shapes, and handle materials, and...
Where can I get a listing, a catalogue or an address where I can get more information on Opinels and Laguioles?
I collect knives and I like the feel of Laguioles and Opinels, I would like to know more about them, instead of buying at almost
random, as I've done to this moment with Opinels.
Thanks, or should I say merci ;)

Why don't you try this site : www.laguiole.com (for $120, you can even
have one made especially for YOU).

These are the sites I've found. Apparently the laguiole design has really
caught on lately in france, and they are made by many makers, some saying
la legende, vrai laguiole, all seeming to be a "real" laguiole, but I don't
think that really means anything, it is just a design. There is one, the societe
laguiole, which was started in the same area where they were first made,
which may have as much claim to being "real" as any. The quality can vary
from bad, to excellent. I bought both of mine in France, one says "La Legende"
laser etched on the blade, and has laminated wood scales, and brass bolsters,
the other has the blade stamped with "Brossard" and also "Sandvik" I bought
it since it had a stainless blade other than 440, and had one piece aluminum liner
and bolsters, which won't tarnish, and has ebony scales. Prices were from 200-
275 francs with the corkscrew also, so about $35-40. They were well fitted,
but suffer the same problem as most laguiole knives, when closed the middle of
the blade rests on the spine, and not on a nubbin on the root of the blade like
most folders, so you have to be careful closing it. I also picked up an opinel,
with carbon steel, for about $10, and after 10 licks on the crock sticks,
it will shave off my arm hair, not bad. Another knife that is the oldest
continuing forge in France is Nontron, it has a similar lock to the opinel,
but is much better made, and has some more history, and different handle shapes.
