We are going to Berck sur mer kite festival (31 March - 8 April) for
the first time next month.

Anyone have any hints and tips on eating, drinking, shopping, car
parking, best place to fly a kite etc?

Go by car.

I tried it by foot ferry and train.

The foot ferry is more expensive (for 2 people) than taking a car.

The french train system is unfathomable to a non-native.

And it doesn't run on Sunday.

And it's slow as hell.

And it doesn't go anywhere near Berc sur Mer.

Believe me, you want to drive there.

Many thanks to the Dec's who rescued me back home.

Dieppe is good. It's a short walk from the ferry.

Lunch is at noon. Book a table if you are serious. Can't tell you where
as there are not enough tables ;-) The 'Grande Assiette' (Sp?) is not for
those with a delicate disposition! (Jacob?)

We should be 8 in 2 cars this year for the first weekend so no space for
hitch-hikers. We do always try to help poor lost souls ;-)

If you're going for the whole fest, there's loads of parking just behind
the seafront to amble around for the first day without your kites. You can
find a parking spot for the next day near your chosen spot. See what and
where the most wayward new creations are flying - don't go there with your
kites tomorrow! Find out where the kids are/will be most - don't go there
especially Thursday! Find which stall is selling the cheapest kites - don't
fly near the nearest steps to the beach! Find out which area of beach is
cleaned last each morning - don't go there early!
See if you can share a truck or hut on the beach with a guest flier -
saves carrying everything each day. Early morning/early evening or the
hospital end of the beach is peaceful. It's especially nice if you can fly
near the hospital sometimes, as the smiles at the windows are priceless.
Despite security, stalls can be broken into (I slept in one all week!), so
don't leave stuff with friendly traders - it won't be their fault if it goes
missing.
I don't remember any flier I've ever met needing tips on drinking, but I
enjoyed an hour or two in non-kiteflier frequented bars sometimes, one near
Casino, or if you want invites to nightclubs/late bars etc. try Corale. Food
is great if you like french food, the french way. I had little patience with
the people who lived on pizza or sausage 'n' chips. Midweek, most bars will
do food - even one with no menu used to do a great submarine sandwich from
the family kitchen! Speak to the council workers about the best value for
money eateries(you'll see them). If it's not too windy, you're in picnic
food heaven. If you like pastries, mmmmmm, I used to have chocolate brioche
for breakfast! The swimming pool complex (Agora) is a good place to meet
people early in the morning, and their beach restaurant does great lunches.
It can get very cold, be prepared. It can get very warm (for time of
year). Sun protection can get sandblasted off in seconds, and sandblasted
sunburn REALLY hurts.
And don't eat or drink after Friday!! 100,000 people to 6 toilets at the
weekend, unless you leave the beach :-)

All this negitivity??? Dave Gomberg usually attends this event. Look
him up and he will tell you all the good spots. This is a very big beach
with lots of room and when the tide is out WOW! Ed
