Hey fellow kiters, I'm looking to add to my collection of Tim Benson
kites and am looking for some of his classics. Specifically the
Wasp and Swallowtail. Heck, even the single line Bee if
you have one.
Know of any other of Tim's kites from the early part of
his career ? Andy?
Thanks folks,
Rod

These are in the UK and not the models you particularly want but ISTR
seeing some old Bensons on Ground Control Kites' stand earlier this
year, either High Profiles or Tempos? There were a couple of them and
they were new.

Hi,

I think Tim started with the Phantom and the Scorcher then a Battam Phantom
there were the bee,s and I may be wrong but he did a few limited runs at the
time of the bee.

The High profile was a Peter Blackmore design I think and the Tempo and
another I beleive were under the Fizz banner by Tim.

An original Scorcher and the Scorcher 2 ( miight be wrong here ) will
certainly be few and far between

As for my Classic collection I have A liteflite heavy and a Microflite by
Mark Cottrel and a K1 and some very very early kites by Chris Matheson AKA
Beaker Yes Chris if youre listening I still have the Back to Black and the
Harlequin Freestyles you built.

Maybe Chris, Andy and Carl would be interested in a retrospective
competition at the Dunstable downs Winter league, Me and Gary would put away
our Buggies and turn up for that, Liteflites North Shores, Scorpions,
Sandpipers, and Phantoms of ,92/3 Vintage only.

Cheers

Andy

hey cool! Just like car racing, kite flying could have a "historic"
competition where you can only fly kites pre 93' or something. Horray
for trying to flat spin the old Team Hawaiians!!! ;-) The old scorpions
were interesting to trick as well.....

take it back to the old school! could be fun ;-)

keep it real, Luke

I really liked the Bee. never managed to get hold of one at the time and I'm
not sure Tim does single line kites any more. I got the feeling Tim started
a long time before the Phantom making a rage of custom single line kites.
I'm sure someone like TC or Rookie can tell us more.

There were a couple of versions of the High Profile. I did the early
versions after a little tweaking from Peter's original. I think I made
around 50 before Martin (Get behind me satern) Thomas linked up with Tim.
Tim did an other redesign and produced a smaller version under the Fizz
banner. Both versions of that would be worth getting hold of. It'd be
interesting to see what new stuff they'd do. Bet they look really shallow
compared to todays kites ;O)

Well suger my *&^% and call me candy ;O) I was thinking about the K1 the
other day. I was remembering how easy it went on its back and how I wish I
knew then, what I know now ;O)

What other versions of the liteflite were there. What was the one Mark did
with the slip bridle?

So, would that be V brace Sandpipers only, or would you let the versions in?
I'd be inclined to go with the V brace version only. I'm sure there's only a
hand full of those around. Did I sign any of the 93's Beaker?

Nice little strole down memory lane ;O)

Chris.

P.S.

Off the top of my head. My collection goes something like.

Phantom: Benson
Phantom Elite: Benson (first run)
Pro Cheater: Rare Air (first ever rainbow)
Big Time: Preston (first run)
Tracer: Simmons

I think I managed to slut a John Hancock from all of the above to go with
the kites too ;O)

Hi Andy,

Hmm, I better stop playing with my older kites, as I imagine they wouldn't
count with new bridles! :0(

My earliest kite is 96/97 I think - not that long ago

an Eddie Stockings (Kited) Midi Neutrino - Pulls like a Pig...

Of course just before he stopped manufacturing he was talking about making a
trick kite in collaboration with *someone* and described the active bridle
to me. I wonder what became of those prototypes?

Hey!, I noticed that nowhere on the list of old kites was the IQ by
Legends (made in canada I think) was prior to 92/3 and a fantastic
flyer - still have it (and fly it) - only thing is, the only original
part is the sail - frame was changed to g- force - bridle was also
slightly altered.
so I guess it would be a waste of time to go to the other side of the
pond to fly in a "legends" type class, cause I suppose everything must
be original. Oh well. Other "classics" I have would be the Hawaiian
from the same time frame, and another old kite that I picked up (can't
remember the name, or who made it) something supposed to be special
about it, is that it was a special run made for the Smithsonian
Institution's earlier flys. It is brand new, and I have not flown it
yet, maybe won't for another 10 yrs or so. ;-)

Mikey luvs ya!

Hmmm.....I've got an '89 Phantom in the garage...looks good up beside
my signed Ron Reich rabbit......way cool having a touch of history
which, in the right hands, flew like dreams.

Right I get up half an hour before I go to bed and......

I fly the Only symetrical pattern custom Jester from Rob Brassington,
then I get out my "as far as I know the only symetrical patterned
custom Pro Cheetah, Zybys Kacmarek, then I fly the kite signed by all
the competitors at World Cup 1 Cyborg.

Then I go to work for 24 hours a day, come home beat the wife....

Then I go to the downs and fly my Original Phantom, Tims own fusion
(which I knicked off him!!) while wearing the only Benson sweatshirt
with black text on a white background (only two I've got them both)
then I take ny Benson line bag out of my prototype Benson DJ bag (see
also Linda Benson, Andy Wardley and Ali & Patrick - for these.)
I then fly my custom JPS Innerspace (1 of 2 Mine & Richard
Liddicott's)

But that it's not the thing, you see Tim's kites are flying, not
collecting. Someone always has more or rarer. If ABW get on this
thread he'll kill us all. I've seen his bag of prototypes,
collectors would die for those. Best thing go out buy it then fly it.
Go home have a cup of tea. ;-)

Back to 92/93.
I'm up for the classic compettions, I guess it's the only way I can
get past those Robertshaw boys (mind you checking the old STACK
results shows a young lad coming between 3rd & 5th in a league in
Hackney Carl sombody, they spelt the name wrong ...:-)

So I guess it's got to be a over 30's class flying classic kites.
Now were did I put my old Firedart...(Eric Wolf fan club member # 427)
Or Ron Reich Sunset Spin off, Or my Pam Kirk signed Team kite.

and for you Quad line chaps, I'll get out the trusty ex Dave Brittain
Red White and Blue custom SUL Rev 2.

OK WHOSE NEXT.....

What about that other uk kite builder Daryl Wilkinson... anyone got
any of his?

And to answer Chris's question. The other Liteflite was the Liteflite
Radial.

PS. for those of you that didnt know Big Gary can flat spin the TOTL
Hawaiian Team Kite. No problem.

So if we have Pin collectors and Kite collectors, what about Tshirt
collectors.

I've got a Benjyboard T shirt from 1979, when I used to skateboard and
a Henry Hester Slalom board with Trakker Full Tracks and Green
kryptonics and road rider 4's.
Oh and an Original Tony Hawk deck still in it's heat shrink wrapper.

(I know it not kites but, it cross fertilisation or something and it's
late.)

but best of all I've got a Bath robe from the Therme Hotel in
Ishikari World Cup 96 !!! and its nice and warm.

Dan San,

We sold (my) Swallowtail and (his) North Shore to fund new kites, but
still got the Pro-Cheetahs (as featured on TV) and our very first kite
- the Lite Flite S (from Malvern Kites).

And, what about the Jester Arc Light and the Aziza - don't see them
around any more.

Wow! Just when I think it is time to pack it in for the night, I find a gem
like this...

Would'ja believe that it was made in New Jersey, USA? Oh well, that is close to
Canada....

Boy, Michael, consider yourself lucky that Rich Javens or Chris Belli don't
read this list... Only dinosaurs like me remember when Chris was at every East
Coast event... Rich Javens (Bogota, NJ) carries on the Legend name and still
makes 'top end' stunt kites.

BTW - do y'know why it is called Legend? Do ya, huh????

When Chris Belli first formed the company, it was called 'Trilogy'. Then
another big, deep pockets, low end, kite company who thought they had a similar
name (yup - those guys...) sent Chris a 'cease & desist' letter. That's when
the name changed from 'Trilogy' to Legend.

Me, I got me a real old Legend, signed by all the Team, back when the Sterlings
were still with them. Yes, I do remember that day on Tybee Island, why do you
ask?

I guess you had to be there.....
