What do you think are the best trick kite right now ?
Psycho, Trimontana, Illusion or what ?
Any place to read review's ?
There is no one kite that does everything equally well... most times it
takes a kite that's good at doing a backspin to learn the backspin, but once
you know how to do it, you can then do it on kites you couldn't before, so
alot of the great trick kites are more for learning purposes than actually
regularly flying. Sometimes I learn something on my Alien that I couldn't
get to work on something else, but once I get it down, I can do it on
everything, Now I'm not going to fly the alien all the time, it's just not
that good a kite, but if I can fly it for an hour and pick up something I
can transfer into a kite that I really love, then hey, it was worth its
price in my bag. I wouldn't fly a Gemini regularly, I dislike how it
snapstalls and it's general flying characteristics are different from what I
like, but I'm considering buying one because I know it will help me perfect
moves that I don't have down 100% of the time right now.
hope that helps some.
(Hey, it may be an expensive hobby kite wise, but their free to fly once you
pay for em!)

about.
I hope this helps & by the way Jamey is right. I learned to axel
consistently on my PBSK Stiletto. I then helped out a friend of mine with a
really inexpensive (cheap) kite and axeled it. I problably would not have
picked up the 'Axel' on that cheap kite but with an axelling machine like
the Stiletto it is really easy to learn.
BTW, I have some reviews at my site www.geocities.com/rahvin101 .

back to your question. THe best trick-kite imo is one you are not afraid to
try new tricks on; one that will seemly help you with the trick- even adding
a trick to what you intended to do. IT's the one that matches the wind,
your style, mood, and ski at that moment. For me, my best trick kite varies
throughout the year. One moment, I and the kite are one, later it seems
sluggish and even out of date. Only to come alive again another day.
I've had several Best trick kites. My suggestion,is to pick one from a
known maker that you can afford, and are willing to break and then GO FOR
IT!
Here's another perspective, the best trick kite can be the one I just
mastered, or the one that I just can't quite afford- YET!

The Darkside is my fav at the moment ... but the Gemini, S4, A51, Stilleto
and Elixir are all good.
I Agree 100% with Jameys post ... different kites teach you different stuff.

I've flown most trick kites and IMO the Gem is the easiest to learn and
can do advanced moves "easily". For example, most modern trick kites can
be made to backspin, but few make it as easy as the Gem. Some will reply
"Ah, but I can make my Peter Powel Stunt Master backspin as well", but
the Gem makes it easy and fun! (which is never a bad thing).
It is a very flatering kite and will improve your skills quickly.
If I had to describe its flying style I'd say "flippy, floppy, spinny,
floaty" (I sound like Jilly Goolden from Food and Drink)
I also have an Area 51, which I dont get on with, too small for my
taste, not stable enough.
My advice, try them all and see which one you like best, most kiters
will let you play with their toys!

The thing for me, maybe part of the challenge that keeps me interested in
this sport, is learning a trick on a kite that makes it easy (backspins on
the gem) and then transfering that knowledge onto something that doesn't do
it quite so easily (backspins on the badboy). That's where the true joy
comes for me, making a kite do something that isn't easy, it's about the
challenge...

If you are looking for recommendations, we need more info.
What is your skill level?
What kites do you have?
What kites do you like?
What is it you want to do?
Are you competing with the kite, if so what type of comp?
Opinions on what you mentioned
Psycho - lots of fun when the wind picks up. You need quick hands, and not
to take the kite seriously
Tramontana - Possibly my favorite competition kite. Prefer the 2001 model.
Great tracking, corners look better to me, stalls are solid. Large hand
movements, and doesn't axle flat are the down side
Illusion - The best rounded kite in my bag. Somedays though it is hard to
make a connection with, other days it is magic.

You've been riding the buggy really fast over bumpy stuff again, haven't
you. ;-) Yes, I plan on being very careful if, while in the car, you ask
"Hey wanna catch some really big air?"
I want to build one and call it "Toiainga"(sp.). It means crazy old man in
Samoan. LOL Also a large single liner called a "Pelagi" (pronounce
pay-long-e). It's the word for European/American, But I think more
literally means "White Cloud".

Have a nice day
Ralf
It's a great little kite, way ahead of it's time.
No offense Jamey, but it's a little narrow minded of you to say "it's
in a foreign language that no one knows but me." I don't know which
North American native language it comes from, but when the designer
told me what it meant all I could thing was "that's cool".
I do admit though that names do color your impression of anything and
kites are no exception.
My own kite design was named the "katana". To most folks (unless they
have watched lots of Samurai movies, or know about motorcycles) the
word is meaningless. When I told folks that a katana is the Samurai's
long sword, the kite got a bit more cool in some people's minds.

I dunno, I think the word "Katana" is pretty well known in toady's culture.
America has been flooded by people trying to escape American culture by
embracing every other culture in the world, Japanese being one of the more
favored.
my main point was that marketing involves if nothing else, a name that can
be passed on between people. If I didn't know what a Katana was, but someone
said to me, this kite is the katana, I could sit down and sound that out and
spell it, I could repeat it to a shop owner, I could tell other friends
about it, but with a kite called a Tohuwabohu, would I even try? I'd say,
yah, I saw a guy with a cool kite the other day, and they'd say, what was
it? and I'd say, I dunno, somethin witha funky name... bad word of mouth
advertising... heck, if it was the tramontana, I wouldn't repeat it if I
could, now if they come out with a traidaho, I'll be all over it!

I do like my Tohu. Nice work, Mr Schob. Underrated. May not be for
everybody.
>I do admit though that names do color your impression of anything and

To follow up on your example, Marty, I always wondered about the name of one
of my kites, the Shuriken Omega from SOA. The Greek part was obvious. But,
unless you were a martial arts follower, you might not have realised that
'shuriken' refers to those throwing stars from ninja quarters. I hadda do a
web search to track that info down :) Somehow, that may have put a spin on
my perception of the kite.
Now, what a throwing star *really* has to do with the flying abilities of a
precision kite hasn't dawned on me yet, but that didn't detract from the
experience...

The name Katana was supposed to conjure up images of being precise and
nimble, a flash in the sky, etc. I was originally thinking of naming
the team kite (which got the name Katana 2, original eh?) a "Tachi"
which was usually a slightly longer sword that was designed to be used
from horseback. The team kite was bigger, and like the tachi wasn't as
nimble, but just as deadly when used properly.
I did make a few kites smaller than the Katana, they never went into
production, and I was going to name it the "wakuzashi", which is the
samurai's short sword. For a time, it was popular to mate a large kite
with a smaller kite to make a really short stack. The combination
often lead to some really interesting flight characteristics. Of
course the combination of the katana and the wakuzashi would have made
up a "daisho".
I liked the name "Jam Session", since it conjured up in my mind a kite
that would lend itself to improvisation.
I thought that the folks at Prism missed a great opportunity when they
came out with the Prophecy, a better name would have been the "Grand
Illusion"...

> because what in the world is a Tohuwabohu??????
Ah the Tohuwabohu... (Tohu-Wa'-Bohu for pronunciation)
an absolutely crazy little 6 foot trick kite that makes
a Psycho seam positively SANE ;-)
Martin Schob, (of TrickTail / Utopia fame) introduced this
kite in the fall of 1997, I wrote one of the first reviews
when it came out, should be on KiteLife.coms web site reviews.
I had toubles with the pronunciation as well at the time, Martin's company is
Jam Kites, so I couned the nickname Toh-Jam, (not Toe-Jam - Yuck;-) because I
was tired of spelling Tohuwabohu all the time in e-mails / correspondence.
Martin likes the name and so it stuck, you will even find it in the written
instructions!
Anyway, it's a hot little Yo-yo machine with an S-shaped spine and some crazy
moves. Try one if you get a chance! I have two, one has been reframed as an
UltraLite with 3mm carbon spine, 2PT spreaders and .157" leading edges.
Gotta fly!

You too eh, WT? I feel the same way about it too. Some days I wonder why I
spend a couple of hundred of quid on the kite; on others, I just know
that I can't live without it. IMHO, it's not that fragile despite other's

It's a mad kite and should be certified. Why worry about the hand speed,
