Hi there everybody, I'm looking for some top-notch Cody box kite plans,
complete with instructions. I've never even seen a Cody kite close-up, so i
haven't the foggiest idea of what i'm doing and need a good guide for my new
project :)

Any help would be much appreciated!

Dave,

I saw a book in my local (UK) library with several detailed plans for Codys,
Extended Codys etc.

I won't be able to get in there until Thursday, but I'll send you the title
then.

Ian.

On second thought, i just noticed on the Gone with the Wind site that a Cody
100 needs 2500 to 3000 lb line. Hmm... i wonder if i'm getting into
something over my head. I had a funny image in my mind of me tying a 16
foot Cody to my car bumper and watching in horror as my little car is
dragged across the flying field :)Does anyone have experience flying Codys?
Is there anything I should know before attempting to build/fly one?

Ive heard it said, that "when you finally have made a well built Cody,
you've arrived as a master kitebuilder." Be very, very comfortable with
kitebuilding before you attempt such a project.

Plans? hmmm....... funny you should ask. In the works is a very cool
searchable database of plans, tech sheets, weblinks, and biographies....
soon to be available on kitebuilder.com

Ive noticed good info at:

Peter Peter's web page, out of the books
Skywork Experience II by Christine Schertel,
Making & Flying Box Kites by Dr. Bill Cochran,
S.F. Cody War Kites by Hugh Andrew,
and TONS of info at the Drachen Foundation www.drachen.org

please keep us posted on your progress...

~Steve

Hi Dave,
Information on how to obtain Hugh Andrew's book "S.F. Cody's War Kites"
is available at http://www.cody-kites.co.uk
This contains the most comprehensive set of plans and detailed building
instructions for making a Cody War Kite that I am aware of.
Plans and some instuctions can also be found in "Box Kites: Making and
Flying" by Bill Cochran. This is a good reference for plans for all
sorts of box kites.
Detailed plans and instructions on how to make a Cody Compound kite are
available at John Maxworthy's web site, http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/
jmaxworthy/plnindex.htm
Good luck,
Ian

The Drachen Foundation, www.drachen.org, owns a large part of the Cody
archive, including photos, kites, and plans. I'm not sure if everything is
available yet, but they would be a good source to contact on this, or any
other historical questions.

I've just finished my first Cody, using the "guidelines" in "Kites" (Ron
Moulton/Pat Lloyd?)

I've put the piccies up at http://www.devonair.co.uk/cody

Why try a 'full-sized' cody ? I bulit one which was about 5foot front to
back and whilst it needed a reasonable wind it didn't pull your arms out of
their sockets!! There was a train built in the 80's in the UK for
man-lifting - is that what you had in mind ?

This book is definitive if what you want to do is make a Cody in absolutely as
traditional a way as possible, down to the use of Bamboo and Herringbone pattern
binding tape. If what you want is something that looks like a Cody and flies like a
Cody, without necessarily being built like Cody would've built it, other sources may
actually be more helpful.

If you want to see the German page in English, just go to:
http://translate.lycos.com/
Type in the web address, and that you want German to English translation.
Fantastic web page.

I got my plans, and loads of help, from Gary Engvall.

These are not 'replica' kites, more 'in the style of', but reasonably simple
to build.

Hope this helps.

Best regards
Andy & Christine
