Did anyone made some experiences with ordering kites by the "Into The
Wind Inc.", (CO, USA) especially with shipping to Germany, Europe?
My questions are: how long does it take since I get the stuff?
does it "arrive" in good condition?
are the prices okay or are there better (cheaper)
traders ?
do I have to pay import-duty (then how much?) ?

I got the catalog '95 last week and I think they have very interesting
offers. In relation to german conditions they also have IMHO very
interesting prices (even if I calculate shipping rates from 14$-28$).

Many, many questions...
Michael.

I believe you are leaving out certian items from your equation. There is a
tariff for the import of kites and kite parts to Germany I believe (someone
will correct me if I am wrong). The company that your order from here in the
U.S. will fill out a declaration of contents form that will be attached to
your order then ship to your address. It will be picked up by your customs
office and shipped to your local post office who will notify you that you have
a package due. You will then be liable for the import tariff for the contents
of the package. An example would be a kite costing $200.00. If you order
Company X will charge your credit card $200.00 for the kite plus about $30.00
for shipping. When you are notified that the package has arrived you will
need to pay the import tariff for the product, which is as high as %20 in some
cases. This could then be as much as an additional $40.00 due when the
package has arrived. The total that you have spent for the kite then becomes
$270.00

Anyone know the current import tariff for kites to Germany? I seem to recall
kite parts being about 5 to 7 percent and kites being 20 percent, but I may be
wrong.

I ordered my MEFM from ITW last year. I think the kite was around $265. I
waited about a month, because they were backordered. I finally got the
kite, in perfect condition, after paying around 40 pounds in duty and tax.
(about $65) So, with the shipping, the kite cost me about $350. Am I
happy? Yep, I have no problem with ITW and mail order in general. Easier
and cheaper to get it in the US, but failing that, go ahead and order.

BTW if anyone cares, I'm moving back to the States this week. Bought a
house in Westport, CT, so any advice on where to fly around there would be
most appreciated.

Cheers..
