What?
The idea of the Soaring Dragon Art Kite Workshop is to gather kite
makers, artists and kite enthusiasts together, share ideas, create art,
fly kites and have fun together.
Internationally recognized California kite artists, Ron & Sandy Gibian,
Tom Joe, Ty Billings, Bobby Stanfield, Jose Sainz, Jennifer Snyder, and
J.R. Tolman will be our guests. Tom Van Sant, noted sculptor and early art
kite maker, will be the featured guest and keynote speaker.
Who We Are
The Soaring Dragon Workshop is a not-for-profit workshop created by
Jennifer Snyder, Bob Harris, and Ty Billings (High as a Kite). We were
inspired by Ron Gibian who wanted to bring together the art world and the
kite world.
Kites are used in celebrations and ceremonies around the world. We wish
to further this spirit in the kite community. A unique feature of the
Soaring Dragon Workshop is the creation of a group kite. Saturday evening
we will have a barbecue and a ceremonial group fly at the beach. The
making and flying of this kite will unite us in spirit. It is our hope you
will come away with knowledge and appreciation for the artistry in modern
kite making, and we will be able to, in some small way, touch the spirit
in each of us that looks to the sky for freedom.
We are creating this workshop by ourselves without the structure of a
kite organization. If it is successful, we plan to have this annual event
become an educational non-profit organization. Until then we are keeping
things as simple as possible. We hope you will understand and appreciate
our intentions. In the event there are funds remaining after this years
workshop, these funds will go into next yearsą workshop. We are very
interested in displaying the artwork of California kite makers on the
World Wide Web at http://www.bhc.com/California_kite_art/. It is our hope
to put the workshop information in cyberspace for everyone to share.
Our special guest, Tom Van Sant, is one of the forefathers of modern
art kite making in America. He fused the physics of sail making and the
artistry of sculpture in the late 60ąs and early 70ąs. Tom will open the
Soaring Dragon Workshop with a talk as follows:
łI would like to talk about the philosphy of the aerodynamics of stall.
This discussion involves many conceptually different designs which work to
achieve the stall in flight, such as foils, and other designs. The
discussion will include the aethetic design incorporated into such forms.
The designs are very involved with the representation of the spirit,
expressing the internal experience by projecting it outside the self. This
is similar to the experience in archery where the self concept is
projected several hundred yards away from the being. A kite extends your
personal internal experience outward into the enviroment by the use of
this instrument.˛
