As many of you will know, Juggletween is an experiment in
distributed video production. The project was launched on
9th June 2004 via an announcement here on rec.juggling

The idea was to get groups of people from around the world (We
managed France, USA and the UK I think), all working together to
produce a juggling video... but without any of them knowing what
any of the others were doing, or even who was involved!

Thanks to Luke Burrage, Trash (Sylvestre Dewa), Michael and
Samuel Karas, JAG, Takako Hayes, Mamphy, Laz, Brian Clark,
Jason Paul and of course myself it is now finished and ready
for download! (And if you ask me, it's really rather good!)

It's available in wmv, mpeg1 and DivX formats, from at least
3 mirror sites (So hopefully you should be able to find a
copy that works on your computer, and is available from a
location that's fast enough to get it... :-)

It's even got an *all new* website (Sorry for the slightly lame
design, but the site was written in about an hour last night
on a computer that decided to keep turning its monitor off...
I'm specifically sorry that it looks gash in Netscape 4 - but
then, if you're still using Netscape 4, you really should try
installing firefox ;-)

http://www.lpbk.net/juggletween/

All comments are gratefully received ...

If anyone wishes to mirror juggletween (I'm specifically looking
for fast hosts in the US or Japan), please email me at the
address shown on the website.

If anyone wants to link to juggletween, please do so, but
link to the page, not the files as their locations are likely
to change over time.

Thanks for watching, Lets make Juggletween II even better!

Fantastic stuff. I'm impressed that it's come together so well. Looking
forward to the next one.

Wow! An excellent video. When do you start on Juggletween II?

Juggling movies on the internet really have moved to a higher level. Five
years ago they contained some quite technical juggling but they were
always presented in a very dry manner. These days people seem to care just
as much about the presentation and style as well as the content. And on
that note, this is one of the best.

I agrre with Colin. The presentation was the best i've seen to date!!
Great work and great backing track as well (i'm a drum and bass head).
However, I would've liked it to have been longer or contained more
juggling when you consider how many people were in the video. Michael
Karas was on for 40 seconds with only two tricks shown. Don't get me wrong
the juggling was great, I especially loved the 3 diabolo stuff but maybe
Juggletween II could include more?

It's great. The freecache thing worked very well too - I downloaded the
26MB mpeg in about 20 seconds!

Well I guess that's down to the contributors and what they wanted to do.
I really enjoyed how it wasn't only a juggling video - it's more
interesting and entertaining how people have played with it. I was
pleased to see that happening from such an early stage.

I imagine a lot of people will now want to get involved, and there'll be a
variety of different types of sections. Which is a good thing.

Probably sometime soon... watch this space :-)

I've learnt a few lessons from doing this one, about what will make
it easier, and more fun, for the next one. I'll write up the ideas,
and form a plan and then post it sometime over the next couple of
weeks.

Thanks once again to everyone who took part! You guys deserve the

If you want the next one to contain more juggling, sign up for a
slot. The only people who decide how much juggling gets shown
are the people that take part. I just stitched their contributions
together... :-)

I know, that surprised me too! Personally though, I found it
quite a nice surprise... I liked the thought that had gone into
the narative of that clip :-)

It contains what the community wants it to contain. If you want
it to contain more, you had best keep your eyes peeled for the
next one and join in! :-)

Narrative ... music ... I am going to have to watch it again with the
sounds on. Unfortunately I don't have headphones and don't expect that
everyone else in the office would want to here it!

On another note (he he), I didn't read any of LPs[1] earlier posts about
Juggletween so I had no idea what the project was about. Funnily enough I
didn't noticed that the transitions from one 45 sec. section to the next.
I didn't realise that it was 5 separate videos until I read LPs earlier
posts.

I am downloading the wmv (9k) 31 minutes to go (freecache) - so I can not
comment on it. The site looks real good, clean, clear to the point. The
only thing I do not like is the <img src="logo.gif" class="logo"
alt="Juggletween Logo" title="Juggletween Logo"/> is not sized, causing the
text to jump all over the place on a dial-up connection. The page is lean
enough that high speed connections will probably not even see it.

Otherwise very well done.

Another thing that anyone on a dial-up appreciates is stating the file size.
I hate starting a download to find out that it is going to take over an hour
to get some video of unknown quality. Thanks to all the reviewers I think
this one will be worth the wait.

Great stuff, now get on with the next one. (is this where people usually
put those smileys?).

Does anyone know of any other video techniques as fun as this that could
be tried out?

And if there is a next Juggletween, you do realise that everyone will want
to submit a video. I guess it would be too much work to let too many
people contribute.

Thanks to Little Paul and the contributors.

The part that I was really surprised by was that, without ever talking
to each other, 4 out of 6 jugglers had a forest background somewhere
within their clip. Shooting during the summer probably raised the chances
of this happening, but still!

I know I barely have to provide encouragement, but anyone who can, DO
JUGGLETWEEN 2! It's tons of fun, and it truly provides the cure for the
common video. I know I didn't juggle as much as some people expected, but
I think that's what I enjoyed most about Juggletween - trying to take a
beginning and end point and make up some sort of story in between - not
just showing off tricks like in my personal videos.

Well, one of the suggestions being thought about for JT2 was that
the whole tween be split into 4 x 60 second segments, and then
each of those segments is given to someone else who splits them
into 4 more 15 second segments and gives them out. That way,
not even I know what's going to happen!

It sounds like fun, but co-ordinating it could be a nightmare,
(I wouldn't want to know who was doing each 15 second bit, but
we also don't want the community knowing who's organising each
60 second bit...)

So I think we probably need to run another tween like this one
first to iron a few bugs out.

I'll announce the details early next week - but there are going
to be more slots available (So more people can join in), they're
going to be shorter (So it's easier to return the clips) , and
with (hopefully) more reliable transitions - and possibly a slight
twist...

Good stuff... I just had a thought on another method of compiling things.

Let's say you get 7 people interested in doing Juggletween2. They can
work in 2 shifts -- 4 people go first. These four think up their own
start and end point. Their videos will occupy positions 1,3,5 and 7.

Once you've got those 4 clips, take a snapshot of the start and end of
each, and give the appropriate ones to the second shift. (That is, the
person in slot #2 is given the ending frame of slot 1, and the starting
frame of slot 3.)

It will allow things to be generated slightly more randomly, and having a
photo available will help people try to match the color of props and
whatnot used. (I wouldn't require the next person exactly replicate the
photo, merely take elements they think should be kept, and let Paul edit
the transition.)

How about the average post length of the rec.juggling's biggest
chatter-boxes?

The following list gives Author, number of posts and average post length:

Little Paul 1963 15.600611
Alan Morgan 1610 15.062733
Andrew John Conway 1332 27.770270
Scott Kurland 1153 11.688638
Michael Ferguson 896 26.933036
Adria M Moskowitz 764 6.289267
Jay Linn 762 19.685039
Greg Phillips 761 14.392904
Sweavo 718 10.679666
Andrew Conway 683 18.568082
Scott Seltzer 596 16.117450
Jason Kollum 560 19.762500
Rob Stone 554 22.438628
Brian D Milner 546 18.036697
JAG 532 21.937970
orbi 529 11.374291

Really interesting data. Honestly.

NOTE: calculating the numer of lines of text written in a particulkar post
isn't easy - I would expect an error of +/- 3 for these averages due to
differences in length of signature etc...

Paul, are there any other statistics that you require

Interesting that when posting with his middle name intact the average post
length increases by 9 lines...!

How about the top 20 posters of 2004 so far?

And what have been the longest threads of this year? This should be an
interesting one - I believe that there will be a direct correlation between
the length of the thread and much it has nothing to do with juggling =)

How many times has a burrowing animal been mentioned?

=)

lp
like the video a lot. its like a video version of a game that the
surrealists
used to play. ''''the exquiset corpse" if you aren't farmiliar with the
game it
was, or is, played by several people who write a sentence or a couple of
sensical words on paper and then fold said paper so that only the last
word is visible to the next person in line. the next player then writes a
sentence starting with the visible word as a guide. the game was called
"the exquisite corpse" because the first games' resulting word
combination was "the exquisite corpse will drink new wine."

a very satisfying and comical result will always ensue.

what i would really find exquisite wold be more of a co ordination of prop
colour and costume. maybe everyone using white props while in full blue
costume. or any combination of any colour you might find satisfying.

the result would be more continious but still be very visual. for instance
white props have very subtle differences in tone when manufactured by
various companies and as for blue (or whatever) costume, we all know
hom many shades/hues/combinations of colour exist.

just my thoughts.

This.

Simply.

ROCKS!

Outstanding Paul. Every sequence was outstanding. I downloaded the mpg,
watched that and then the massive AVI... nice quality difference.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the obvious fun and creativity all the
participants put into their segments. It took me a few seconds to realize
that Micheal had handed off his segment. It was so nicely paced. I was
duly impressed by all.

Awesome!

Apparently I live there. Although, strangely enough, in that entire pile
of juggling paraphernalia there was not a single set of poi.

cheers jag - you really should get some poi; they're super fun, and you
don't have to try too hard to look great.

or of course you could just carry on playing with the juggling toys you
already own - you do have quite a few don't you!

i still don't get michael's reference - is this a running joke between you?

or am i being stupid - i could guess that little paul just told michael
his starting shot was 3 balls on the ground and his ending shot was him
knocking on the door of the home of poi?

but unless it is a running joke, that makes no sense either since the next
shot begins at your house and michael refers to home of poi outside the
video too...

hello,

just wanted to apologise for rudely outing you and telling everyone you're
crap at poi, even though we've never met.

very bad form i realised and i just wanted to say i'm usually far more
polite.

honestly though, i did see a video and you were quite crap.

every other video i've seen you in however you have been juggling.

i liked all those.

Erm, how could it be? Neither JAG nor Michael knew the other one
was taking part, and neither one of them had any way of knowing
who was before or after them...

Such is the joy of a juggletween!

Michaels details were
start: Shot looking down on 3 balls lying at your feet
end: Ring someones doorbell

JAGs details were
start: Answer your front door
end: Throw a club out of shot to the right of frame.

Not that that helps you with the (somewhat inspired if you ask
me :-) Home of Poi reference.

google for "home of poi" ... but then that probably won't help
you either.

I meant JAG needs new socks. Watch the video to see what I'm getting at.

Somehow I think coleman just needs to go and lie down in a
darkened room for a bit, just until he's worked it all out...

yep, got that - i only followed up on my comment directed towards yerself
because i didn't want to come off as another arrogant wanker posting on
rec.juggling

JAG could use those new socks to make poi you know...

now where's that dark room at paul?

you're right - google didn't help explain at all.

i still don't get the 'inspired reference' or understand why michael's sig
is www.homeofpoi.com ??

guess i'll just sit here in the dark until i can be bothered to ask
someone that's in on the joke to explain it to me.
or did i do that already...?

a bit more back on topic, i think the idea for matching props (at least
used for start and end points of adjacent clips) in juggletween2 is an
invaluable one.

and there should be at least one person doing 'can of baked bean contact
juggling'.

after all, juggling's not all about balls, clubs, rings and diabolo is it
paul? ;8)

Unless im very much mistaken, the last time i saw you spin was at
Glastonbury :o)

Then again, I too have been bitten terribly by the juggling bug too
recently, right up to the point where i called my poi, juggling balls.

Oh hahaha.

The hilarity is unsurpassable.

Hi Paul,

excuse the late reply, I've been out of the loop. That was DOPE. Shout
outs all round. I especially like Trash's video, that crazy frenchman. I
for one will be trying to get a camera to participate in future
juggletweens.

Yeah, I've just got back from holiday, and downloaded it. It was
fantastic stuff. As was the realisation as I was downloading it that my
ISP has just doubled my connection speed. For free.
