"way down south of Picton, new Zealand, theres a small backpackers hatel
called the jugglers rest where you can stop off on your tour of the south
island of that beautiful country.
theres a nice pool and piles of juggling equipment to play with. they also
have a well stocked library which includes books like this one.
this may be the only hotel in the world operating on a juggling theme.
don't forget to tell them i sent you!
you can find them at:
8 canterbury st., Picton, Marlborough, new Zealand. (03) 573-5570
i would be very intreeged into going to a juggling hotel.
so has anyone been or knows anyone that has. if not, any body wanna go
with me?

Hi there Jimifun,
I was there for ten days at the end of three months travel at New Zealand.
This was about three years ago, and i had a fantastic time there - the
staff were lovely, the place was simple and cheap, and the guests in the
hostel tended to be really nice. I seem to remember that there was space
for about15 guests max in the hostel. When i went there it had just been
taken over from it's previous owners, and the new owner was thinking of
leaving the juggling theme behing (i think he could juggle, but was
certainly not massively into it), so i'd get conformation that it's still
running as a juggling hostel before you head to NZ to try it.
Hope this helps
Dave
Call me a nitwit, but how exactly does a juggling-themed hostel work?!?
Yours, ever so slightly confusedly

It was shut when I was there in 2004. I found out after I arrived that
in the winter the owners head off to europe to work and shut the hostel
as it's the off season. That might have changed now though.
Basically it's a hostel with juggling practice space. I think at one
point if you could do 5 balls you got your first night free.

I haven't stayed a night there, but I left my car there when I went to
the North Island for the NZ juggling convention in 2006. There are some
props there and I think the owners can teach and run workshops for people
who already juggle. If you do go, get in touch with me - I've got some
friends in Motueka (nearby Picton) who juggle and are always happy to meet
any jugglers who go through town. And yes I believe the hostel is shut
during the off-season.

Gotta love the place... Will (the owner?) has a pet Monkey he takes
travelling too.
It also has a hammock and a cat.... that with the juggling theme what more
do you need from a place ;))
Cheese, Peachimpy - found a new home from home
if and when i go, i will do just that.
thank you for this kindness
I was there in February just to see what it was like. They do have props
(clubs that may need a little repair, lots of sock poi, various balls and
maybe a devil stick), and most of the staff seems to juggle or at least do
poi. They were very happy to have someone to pass with. Currently it is
owned by a woman named Nikki who is more of a poi spinner than a juggler,
but they have fuel for juggling or spinning at nights (when it's not
raining). They teach workshops on making beanbags (or poi maybe), and
sell some of their home made bags, as well as sock poi. They are not open
during the off season (which should be about now until January), along
with most of Picton.
There's a common room with a kitchen and some tables. Most of the guests
do not juggle, but some may know how to do three, or have learned while
there. There is a huge library, and it did have some juggling books, but
I didn't spend much time looking through the collection. Internet is
coin-op and by the minute.
It has a great courtyard for juggling, and in the morning you can see the
sun coming through the stained-glass juggling clubs embedded in a wooden
fence, covered in vines (they also make "juggle jam" from the grapes on
the vines, which may be your best bet a souvenirs from this place).
Do visit Hex's friends in Motueka... they are really good people and could
always use someone to pass with.
