If anyone is wanting to enter the BYJOTY next year, please email
lu...@juggler.net so I can keep track.
First, I'm going to be doing a series of written and video workshops about
putting together a juggling act and performing. These will be posted on my
blog, but with inks here too. See this link:

Second, there will be a rule change for this year. In previous years the
time
limit for a juggling act was between 2 and 5 minutes. Unfortunately this
lead
to many acts that crammed in about 4 minutes 59 seconds of juggling. This
is not a good thing, as very, very, very few jugglers can do that much
juggling without making mistakes at the same time as keeping the juggling
itself interesting.
So, the new rule is that while an act can still be up to 5 minutes long,
nobody
is allowed to do more than 3 minutes of juggling. The range to aim for is
actually between 2 minutes and 2 minutes 30 seconds of juggling. This will
hopefully have the following effects:
1. The jugglers will have less juggling to choreograph, leading to better
trick
selection and tighter choreography.
2. The jugglers will have less juggling to practice, leading to more time
spent
practicing fewer tricks.
3. The jugglers will do less juggling on stage, and even if they
completely
suck, that will limit the number of drops they can manage.
4. I don't have to worry so much about the running time of the whole show,
as there's always about 12 acts that enter.
5. The audience will see a much better show.
Some other points:
1. Just because the juggler CAN spend time on stage not juggling, they
don't
have to fill up the other 2 minutes with anything at all.
2. If a juggler already has an act with longer juggling, they can perform
more
than 3 minutes of juggling. But they have to clear it with me first.
3. If a juggler REALLY NEEDS to do more than 3 minutes of juggling, I can
be
convinced. To convince me the juggler must already have entered the BYJOTY
in the past, so I know they are capable. Or they must send me a video of
themselves running the entire act, with no drops or mistakes, at least 4
weeks before the BYJOTY event.
Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Luke B.
