I'm looking for old stuff that i'm unable to find either on internet or in
shops.
The first is big wooden hoops. Remember the kids driving a wooden hoop
with a stick ? It was very famous at the beginning of 20th century (i
discovered lately that it was also very famous during the romans time).
The only hoops now are plastics ones.
The second is a cigar holder. It is very rare, some people selling cigars
even say that it doesn't exist at all. There's a description of the object
on freepaterns.org, and maybe a seller of plastic ones in hong-kong.
Any suggestions ?
Cheers

Try finding a cooper (barrel maker). I believe Charlie Holland at the
Circus Space was looking in to this
at one time, so perhaps you could ask him.

Do you mean the type you hold while smoking a cigar, or the type that you
store a cigar in?

I looked into wooden hoops a while ago, and sport-thieme carry a range
that looks interesting (and at reasonable prices)

That link goes to the UK version of sport-thieme, but iirc there are
various localised versions of the shop if the UK is not where you're at.

I can't seem to get freepaterns.org to point to anything sensible, not
even if I spell it freepatents.org (which sounded plausible)
One avenue I'm exploring at the moment is having a couple of props custom
built by a friendly wood turner (who is probably reading this - I'll
get around to doing those sketches soonish... honest!)
If you can draw up a design, and find someone who owns the right tools and
has the skills - you could probably get something made.

Perhaps you are not a juggler, and have never been to this usenet
before, but jugglingdb is only one portal to this usenet which existed
before jdb did. I never use jdb, and many others use a wide range of
access. Which is good for your purposes, because the potential
audience is that much wider too.
Now, about your hoops. We would like to know what you plan to do with
them, since there is so much interest in that prop these days with
tossing, twirling, rolling in fancy ways, tossing them up and then
something else through one, contortionists, etc. And I would like to
know more about why wood, and why there ever were large wooden hoops
for kids to roll around (if any ever really did).

I know the wooden hoops that are used with a stick as one of my friend has
one, they are cool but not good for hoop rolling.
You need to have a look on the Anthony Gatto forum where Dave Altman has
recently made a about placing an order (the topic is called Wooden Hoops
under the Juggling Discussion area). Roughly $30 a hoop, have to say I'm
tempted myself!
In fact I'm surprised Mr Altman has not replied to this topic yet...

Trundling a hoop has been a favorite outdoor activity for children for
centuries. Hoops were shown in an engraving for Jacob Cats's poem
"Kinderspel" as early as 1628 and were frequently included in
illustrations of children's activities and games in the late 18th and
19th centuries. Early hoops were of metal; in the 1800s, handmade wood
hoops were all the rage as a favorite plaything. The child's hoop was
propelled by stroking a...dowel or stick along the top. "Rolling",
"bowling" and "trundling" a hoop really came into its own in Victorian
times. Hoops were raced and used for skipping.

Good quality wooden hoop of proper dimensions. Very popular with

be used in many ways, even as a hoola hoop. Hoop is made of layered
hardwood, stick is made of beech. Made in Europe.

(agedest, I don't understand what was your point about jugglingdb, it's
not the first time i post here, and yes i'm a juggler to answer your
questions)
Thanks The void ! The first link is exactly what I'm looking for !
Little Paul you were right, freepatents that was.
Thanks also to you two Paul and agedest, you were really a lot of help.
And I swear I looked on google before asking :) . My main interest in them
is to learn how to roll them on the floor like children did and also learn
how to roll them on the floor around me like old jugglers did.
Cheers
Oli
I think that agedest was attempting to point out that you addressed your
post to "jugglingdb members" - but not everyone who reads/posts here is
a jugglingdb member. (rec.juggling is not jugglingdb and vice versa)
> Little Paul you were right, freepatents that was.
Is freepatents working for you? I just get a blank page. I'm intrigued
by the notion of a cigar holder - could you provide a link to the patent?
> My main interest in them
> is to learn how to roll them on the floor like children did
This is pretty straight forward, and any of the wooden hoops you've been
pointed at should work for this.
> and also learn
> how to roll them on the floor around me like old jugglers did.
This is less straight forward. I've thought about trying this several
times and have asked around for advice, and I've had mixed responses.
Some say the profile of the hoop matters, some say it doesn't. (Although
everyone says you need a lot of space and that shaker cups are less
irritating for everyone else in the gym at clubs/conventions ;-)
Hoop rollers traditionally used wooden bicycle rims, which have a groove
in the outside edge. I'm not sure how necessary that groove is, but it
seems to me that at least a flat outer edge may be important. The
hoops I pointed you at were suitably cheap that you could probably buy
one and take a router to the outside edge of it and experiment.
I'd love to know how you get on though, please keep us up to date with
your progress - if you find something that works at a sensible price
I may even be tempted to dabble myself!
While I'm here - does anyone have any tips for catching a pipe in your
mouth? The usual cigarette trick of sticking your tongue out, catching
it on the tongue and pulling it into the mouth isn't working. Presumably
because the mouthpiece of the pipe is plastic and too slick to stick
to my tongue.
I'm not working for freepatents, neither the oposite.
Here's a link :
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4711254.html
It doesn't provide new information though.
I'll try the hoops you guys found for me. Thanks
And I've now idea how to help you with the pipe.
Olivier
After observing Bob Bransom's hoop rolling routine, I think the cupped
edge is essential to the giant number nine figure he traces on the
floor. He sat up a corral, rolled a hoop to the right of the corral
with backspin. It switched edges, reversed directions, turned left, and
rolled all the way around the corral before entering through a seemingly
impossibly small gate.
I think his hoops were made of fiberglass.

Thankyou, I now keep getting my tongue stuck on my jumper. Any tips
for that?
Stop licking your jumper?
I find your reply off colour. Yes. With a u.
That's just how strongly I feel about it.
In which case, I question your suitability to be a parent.
That's just what the judge said as well.

I've held one of Bob Bramson's smaller hoops and it was definately made of
wood.

That's pretty cool!

Haha! I honestly expected you to have corrected this before me ;o) Do you
remember I was too scared to

Well, I didn't want to brag ;-)
But I do remember the look on your face, and the way you stopped dead in a

Aww, stop it, you're making me blush!

I'm really interested in this cigar holder. The problem is that shipping
would cost me 20£. Would you be kind enough to order two for me and send
them to France ? Does it bother you ?
I'm still looking for an other solution.
Kindly.
Olivier
Hi Olivier,
As far as I can make out, I have to create an account on that site just to
find out what the postage to
me would be. I assume you have already signed up to get the £20 figure. If
you can find out what the
shipping cost to the UK will be, and you think that that plus [the cost of
me sending the parcel to
France by some kind of registered post(1)] will still be less than £20,
then.... maybe. Also how would
you get the money to me? I can take a Paypal payment, but that would cost
me ~4% of the total, so
that would be another cost to you.
Unless you know someone who's going to be at Bungay(2), this is starting
to look like a convoluted
method of getting them to you, which might just be worth £20 to
avoid(3)....
The Void

Glow plug fug
(1) You'll need to find this out too.
(2) All threads lead to Bungay
(3) But not this one.
Thanks for your imagination. Indeed, it may be easier just to pay the £20.
I'll do that
salut !
