Hope you can help me. I have to make pants for a school play for a
girl who will be walking on stilts. Since I don't have personal
experience with stilts, I am not sure if there are any special things
I have to know regarding those pants. For example, how wide should
they be? Should I put an elastic on top or a drawstring - how would
you go "down" from the stilts (I am thinking you should let the pants
fell down first, then jump yourself, so drawstring should be better,
right?).
I will appreciate any advice. Thanks!!!

If the person using the stilts is not skilled enough not to fall - disaster
is lurking. Unless you make them from paper there is not time to remove
pants while falling.

I've just realised that you very rarely see anyone
getting down from stilts, and I've never seen anyone
'jumping down' as the original message seems to
suggest.

Any time I've seen someone getting down from
stilts they've sat on - or leaned against - a handy
wall, van roof, etc. I have seen one stilted clown
pull up his trouser legs with a pair of built-in
drawstrings so he could get to the buckles/webbing etc.

Casting my mind back I *can* recall someone
jumping down, but that was from old fashioned
'childrens' stilts. These were just long lengths of
timber with a step on the inside edges, and the user
held the top ends. Not a strap in sight. A boy at our
school used to have some instead of a bicycle, and made
short work of his journey with about an eight foot
stride.

Its funny you mention this topic, Cause I just ordered a peir of stilts,
and should have them in about 2 days. This will be my second set. I dont
know what happened to my first set, but they got lost a few years ago.

Getting back to your question, there is a very easy way to make good stilt
pants. Go to K-Mart or some cheapo store, and get two pairs of XXL OR XXXL
sweat pants. They should be wide enough for the stilt to fit under easily.
cut the first pair off near the shins, and cut the legs of the other pair
off at about the same spot, and near the crotch of the pants. Now you
should have a pair of legs which are seperate from the rest of the pants.
Sew the legs on to the pants that were cut off at the shins. The legs that
are to be sewed on should be inverted, so that the part that was at the
crotch is at the bottom of the stilt. This room at the bottom of the pant
allows for the pants to fit like bell bottoms arount the bottom of the
stilt, which hides the bottom of the stilt.

NO ONE JUMPS OFF OF STILTS!!! On any real set of stilts, you are straped
in, making this feat impossible. ***Do NOT make the pants longer than
needed*** this will reduce the risk of tripping over the pants.

My instructions may not have been clear, so if you have troulb following
them, e- mail me at JFatS...@aol.com to clarify anything. Put STILTS in
the subject line so I dont think its junk mail. Good luck.
