Folks,

Well my dad is turning 70 and he's always wanted to have a nice bolt
action rifle. He pretty much a Remington guy, so I'd like to stay with
them if possible. The Remington Model 700 BDL SS DM looks to fit the
bill, but I was wondering if anyone out there has had any experience
with this model or one of its variants. Pros? Cons? Just thought I'd
ask before laying down somewhere, I believe, around $700.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

I bought a Rem 700 ADL (30.06) last year. The ADL is the same rifle
action/barrel, etc., as the BDL, but not as "fancy". The ADL has a walnut
stock with cheek comb, checkered grip, and a non-removable magazine. The
BDL has a swirl polished bolt, removable magazine, more checkering, and
"ebony" accent on the stock fore piece.

I really like my 700. I put about 50 rnds through it initially to get a
feel for the trigger and recoil, and I continue to shoot if periodically
for target practice. I also hunt with it and have taken six feral hogs with
it this year, the longest shot being about 200 yds and the rest being 100+
yds

The 700 has a good reputation, and has been around for many years. It was
introduced in 1962, and quickly became Remington's most popular bolt action
rifle. It's reliability, serviceability, and accuracy earned it a place as a
military special operations sniper rifle during Vietnam, and Desert Storm.

I'd bet your dad would like it ..........

Great Gun Bill, I have had Two of them, I just sold one recently. The DM
was one of the reasons I bought the Gun. It's well built and I like it
much more than a Floorplate. I load and unload my gun a lot in a day, we
hunt all over our property and I have to unload the gun every time I get
in a vehicle. It's a lot easier to just pop the Magazine out then fumble
around with a bunch of loose shells. Especially with cold hands or with
gloves on. On top of that it's a very accurate gun and the action is
very smooth to operate. I think your Dad will love the gun.

Crabby,

Thanks for taking the time to write up the note. I appreciate your comments. I figured it was a pretty good gun, but wanted to get a second opinion since this falls into my "this is a lot of money, so let's
get it right" category. Also, thanks for the explanation of ADL and BDL.

I own the exact gun in a .338 Win Mag with synthetic stock and screw-on/off
muzzle break. Have had the gun 3 years and enjoy it immensely. The detachable
mag is a great feature. You can't go wrong with this gun. Its rugged and should
last several lifetimes!

Good luck and let us all know how your dad liked the gun!
